Striving for Good

If you walk around the College at present you will notice chalk murals, messages of hope and love on sticky notes, students making videos of good news stories and even the odd act of random kindness. This is all associated with the year 8 unit on "Striving for Goodness".  Within the Christian worldview God is acknowledged as the highest good. Created in the image and likeness of God, women and men are inherently good. In this unit students explore and affirm the good in their lives and the reality that the distortion of good can prevent us from realising the fullness of our humanity.

The learning activities, including the ones mentioned above, aim to see our students appreciate the Christian belief that good triumphs over evil, articulate an understanding of how aspects of Christian living can assist people to grow in goodness and explore and draw meaning from examples of good and evil in life and in the Scriptures.

Some of the scripture that we look at comes from Deuteronomy (30:15-20). Many of you who remember the band Wham from the 80s will recall George Michael wearing a T Shirt proclaiming "Choose Life". This is the essence of this reading. We are most happy and fulfilled when we live in the Kingdom of God, when we do those things that we know are right and good, when we "choose life'. Our human nature dictates that we are tempted by those things that are not good. This ultimately leads to unhappiness and despair.

A Christian message is that we can start making decisions that 'choose life' no matter what we have done in the past. The sacrament of reconciliation is an awesome way to start. As Christians we have a King who came to serve, not be served, setting a roadmap for choosing life and happiness. To this end the year 8 unit is a great vehicle to live the Catholic Value "The Common Good" and specifically the principle of "preferential treatment of the poor".

So if you see a wave of O'Connor year 8 students that are busy striving for goodness, you will know why.
