Music update

Welcome to the first Music article for the new Shelford newsletter. Unfortunately, as things aren’t quite back to normal I still haven’t had the opportunity to meet many of the parents in the Shelford community, but as things are gradually starting to ease, I’m looking forward to meeting you all soon.

As many of you would be aware, all Shelford ensembles have been back rehearsing and preparing for our upcoming series of concerts. Can I remind everyone, if your child is unable to attend a rehearsal please email me at fblakiston@shelford.vic.edu.au.

It is worth noting there are several important dates coming up:

  • Monday 17 May – Instrumental/Vocal Soloist Concert
  • Thursday 20 May – String Soloist Concert
  • Tuesday 25 May – Autumn Concert
  • Friday 28 May – Junior School Performing Arts Showcase

Both the Instrumental and String Soloist Concerts are open for students to perform. If there are any students interested in performing, please speak to your instrumental teacher about it.

For the Autumn Concert and Junior School Performing Arts Showcase, as these concerts feature many of the Shelford ensembles there will be more information coming out shortly. If you do have any questions please feel free to contact me at fblakiston@shelford.vic.edu.au.

While we have many students that have taken up learning an instrument, I would always encourage any student who is interested to take up the challenge of learning an instrument. While for many the pure enjoyment of learning an instrument and making music is reason enough. I recently came across a fantastic video that looks deeper into the effect Music has on brain. It is well worth watching, so feel free to watch.

For any parents that have questions about instrumental music lessons for your daughter, please feel free to contact myself or Kirsten Ehrenberg (kehrenberg@shelford.vic.edu.au).

Senior Choir

All Year 7–12 students are invited to join the Shelford Senior Choir.  This ensemble will rehearse every Tuesday afternoon 3.30–4.30pm in the Assembly Hall, beginning on Tuesday 11 May. The ensemble will be conducted by Ms Jenni Thom and accompanied by Ms Kathryn Pisani.

There are many benefits to being a member of a choir, such as:

  • meeting other Senior School girls who enjoy singing
  • learning how to use your singing voice
  • learning to sing with others with harmonies
  • developing performance skills
  • learning to read music
  • developing team work skills
  • the sheer joy of singing with others, and sharing this with an audience!

The ensemble is going to begin the year with an arrangement of the popular ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ and other repertoire which will explore a wide range of material, from classical to popular to modern Australian choral works.

Regular performances will be scheduled during the year.

Interested students should meet Ms Thom at the first rehearsal.

If you have further queries, please contact me on jthom@shelford.vic.edu.au or 9524 2002.
