Financial Literacy Series

Last week, Year 11 and 12 students enjoyed the first in a series of financial literacy sessions with Ayalah Thorbjornsen of Stiletto Staircase.

Ayalah is a self-made, highly relatable and inspirational woman who was born and raised in Melbourne. As a business owner and advertising industry expert, Ayalah has proven herself savvy at achieving financial goals on her own merits. Ayalah launched Stiletto Staircase to help young people develop an understanding of the basics of finance, empowering them and setting them up for a bright, financially independent future.

In their first session, Ayalah introduced Shelford’s senior students to the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), as well as the basics of superannuation and taxation. Students found the session engaging and highly relevant. Over the rest of the year, Ayalah will take students through the basics of bank accounts, credit cards, phones plans and insurance, as well as budgeting and saving, car ownership and home loan deposits.

Year 12 subject tutoring

We continue to offer tutoring and support sessions for Year 12 students Monday–Thursday each week from 4.30–7.30pm in the Senior Innovation Learning Centre (SILC).

Our tutors are Shelfordians with expertise in a variety of subject areas. There are two Shelfordians at each session providing support in a mixture of subject areas. Students can work collaboratively or individually and receive advice with anything from study habits to writing an essay.

Currently in its second year, this program continues to be very popular with students. All Year 12 students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.
