Junior School update

Jacqui Sidaway, Head of Years 3–6

Term 2 has begun with an exciting buzz in the air, and everyone is ready for another action-packed term in the Junior School. Our Athletics Carnival last week was a resounding success; with beautiful weather and a well-earned win to Thomas House. Head to the Sports report for full details.

ANZAC Day events

Report by Claude R (6A) and Sophie N (6B)

On Friday 23 April, the Shelford Junior School came together to commemorate ANZAC Day and the brave men and women who served for Australia. The assembly was hosted by Year 6, who read the famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McRae. We were also very fortunate to have a guest speaker, Mr Ian Palfery, who served during the Vietnam war in the Headquarters 1st Australian Task Force. He spoke to us about the origins of ANZAC day and what ANZAC day means to him. Our assembly closed with our trumpet teacher playing the Last Post.

The Year 3 and 4 students commemorated Anzac Day by making Anzac biscuits. The girls were delighted to be among the first Shelford students to visit the beautiful new food tech space, where their biscuits were baked to perfection! Many thanks to Ms Ranieri and Jane for all their help.

Year 5 & 6 Camp – Anglesea Valley Lodge

Report by Coco A (6B)

At the end of Term 1, the Year 5 and 6 students went on camp, it was really exciting! Camp was a great opportunity for all the students to bond and connect. We made new friends and created stronger connections with each other. The teachers were all so kind, caring and patient. On the final morning they even held a surprise Easter egg hunt! There were a range of amazing activities at camp and we had lots of experiences we'll remember forever. Below we have listed some of our favourites:

  1. Kangaroos: We saw kangaroos in the wild at sunrise and sunset each day. They were so cute as they hopped through the grass and across the field.
  2. Archery: We learnt to use a bow and arrow and how to shoot it. There were three hay bales at different distances. We could choose which one we wanted to shoot. I enjoyed this activity because it was a fun learning new techniques of how to shoot an arrow.
  3. Beach Day: We played games on the sand, learnt some body boarding techniques and canoed on the Anglesea River.
  4. Low ropes course: It was really challenging, but that didn't stop us and we kept on going until the end. Our group took a bit of time to get through, but we made it eventually! The course was very creative and I've never seen anything like them before.
  5. Night bushwalk: On the first night we went for a walk in the bush with our torches. It was like an adventure because we looked at the stars. I’d never seen the stars in the country before; they looked beautiful.
  6. Mountain bike riding: This activity was really fun because we learnt to do tricks and how to go over big logs. We had to go around a bunch of puddles but sometimes we rode through them!

Overall camp was a blast! We are sure that it was an experience that all Year 5 and 6 students will remember for a long time to come.
