Principal's news

Katrina Brennan

I am delighted to write my first piece for our reinvigorated Shelly Newsletter and I welcome you to this new and improved communication channel.

I hope you will enjoy receiving fortnightly news from across the school and notice of upcoming events. You will be able to see our wonderful students in action, student work, event and activity recounts, videos, photos and more. I look forward to your feedback as we progress.

Anzac Day

Last week we held Anzac Day assemblies in both the Junior and Senior Schools. These more formal assemblies featured guest speakers, who had served our country and who spoke about their experiences. In addition, students presented poems and reflections, sang appropriate songs and stood for the Last Post and reflection. In the Senior School, our Captains laid a commemorative wreath.

Anzac Day has become an occasion to honour all who have worn our country’s uniform in service. We reflect on that service. We recognise more than one hundred thousand Australian service men and women who have lost their lives in military operations carried out in our country’s name. We honour the values that have been invested in the original Anzacs – loyalty, selflessness, courage.

Anzac Day is a day to remember with affection the courage of people and the value of friendship – to honour the dead and to acknowledge those who suffer still from the effects of war. We do not celebrate victory or glorify war; we celebrate the human spirit – the spirit of Anzac.

At this time in our history, perhaps it is incumbent on us to do more than just honour the fallen. Let us recognise our innate capacity to unite and protect the more vulnerable among us. To realise that the qualities for which we honour the Anzacs, live on within all of us.

Endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour, friendship and devotion – to duty, to each other and to Australia.

Lest We Forget.
