Indigenous Literacy Day

Celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day

Wednesday 2 September is Indigenous Literacy Day 2020. In previous years, the celebration for this day has taken place at Sydney Opera House with children from remote communities, local schools, Indigenous Literacy Day (ILF) ambassadors and supporters. This year, due to COVID-19, it is open for the first time to everyone, Australia-wide!

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation invites primary schools, libraries and early education centres to join a special Indigenous Literacy Day online event designed for children 3-11 years of age. ILF ambassador Jessica Mauboy will sing The Barramundi Song in two Indigenous languages – Tiwi and Mangarrayi, as well as English. Hosted by Indigenous author and performer Gregg Dreise and NITV presenter Natalie Ahmat, this event gives younger audiences a celebratory experience of Indigenous language and literacy. There is even a sneaky, cheeky visit by children’s author Andy Griffiths!

This exciting virtual event will launch on the Sydney Opera House YouTube channel at 2pm on Wednesday 2 September. The link to the event will be posted to all Google Classrooms. We encourage students and families to take part is this wonderful celebration on Wednesday.
