Celebrating National Tree Day

Jo Elmer, Early Childhood Teacher

Twelve months ago, on the last week in July, the children in the Blue Group, joined the preps from Carnegie Primary School to plant 'scrubs' in the shared bush garden, as part of celebrating National Tree Day.  The scrubs were donated by the Glen Eira Council.  Children worked together, armed with spades, trowels and watering cans in hand, to dig, plant, back-fill and water in the scrubs.

Twelve months on, the Bush Garden is now well established, with scrubs and trees thriving and growing tall, so the children from both the kindergarten and school can enjoy.

The children and educators also spent time in the bush garden, hugging our trees instead of each other.  It gave us all a moment in time to feel calm and happier.  It also gave us the freedom to express our thoughts and give thanks to our wonderful trees for providing us with oxygen to breathe and absorbing our carbon footprint.

When was the last time you hugged a tree?  Give it a try as it feels so good!
