Year 7 Camp

We have now rescheduled the Year 7 Camp for 28 - 30 August, 2019.  While this is unfortunately in third term, there were no other earlier dates that were available for the Forest Edge Campsite and suitable on our calendar.  This will still be an important occasion for our students to develop and deepen their friendships amongst other Year 7 students while giving them the opportunity to undertake challenging and fun activities.

Harmony Day – Tuesday, 12 March

Harmony Day is an annual event in which our College highlights and celebrates our multicultural diversity. When you look at the Cranbourne Campus we have…

Our diversity in culture was almost matched by the number of different activities and food stalls that we were able to offer to our students on the day.  As you can see, VCAL students carried the bulk of the work and did a terrific job, however, the Student Representative Council and student forum leaders from the houses were also wonderful in providing food and activities celebrating different regions of the world.

MITCHELL RABOT STAFF V. STUDENTS CRICKET MATCH

An important tradition on Harmony Day is the Staff V Student Cricket Match named in honour of a former teacher Mitchell Rabot.  Mitch was responsible for writing the College History for our 20th anniversary.  Unfortunately, ill health kept Mitch away from umpiring the match this year, however, it was wonderful to have his grand-niece Stacey Rabot playing for the student team.

It was certainly one of the more entertaining matches played in quite a while and the crowd on the hill added to the atmosphere.  Even Yabba would have been proud of the witty repertoire of sledges from the assembled staff and students.

The students led by Sports Captain, Damon Quirk, won the toss and elected to bat.  The staff struggled to initially organise themselves as new captain, Mr Ehsan Islami, attempted to control some of the bigger egos in the team.  The fact that keeper, Mr Matt Williams, was unable to find gloves and instead turned up with a baseball mitt did not assist the staff team’s reputation.

Damon and College Captain, Jonathan D’Rozario, opened the batting and set about building a big target in a short time.  Numerous sixes by Jonno certainly kept the crowd watching the game carefully, if for no other reason than their own safety.  A controversial wicket was that of Marian House Captain, Ashwin Palinsamy, who was run out by a lone Scotsman, Mr Calen Robinson, disguised as a photographer. Calen threw down the stumps after the students attempted a quick single. After Jonno retired and Damon Quirk caught behind owing to some brilliant off-spin bowling, the staff were into the tail. The pace bowling of newcomer Mr Mark Robinson (we did recruit well this year) helped restrict the students to 73 runs.  Social Justice Captain, Ryan Bracks, was the only one the staff would trust to keep an accurate scorebook and when a recount found the score added to 75, the staff reluctantly accepted the tougher run chase.

Mr Chris O’Hara and Mr Andrew Broadley began solidly, keeping the scoreboard ticking over and the target always seemed within reach.  O’Hara retired, but Broadley refused to go even when given out controversially for handled ball.  Mr Gerard Brown enjoyed a short but significant innings with some big hitting before new Sports Manager, Mr Leigh Murphy and Mr Andrew McMellon ensured victory with just 2 balls to spare.  While scorer Mr Barry Fisher cast doubt on the result by questioning whether an extra over had been bowled by the students, staff quickly discredited this claim and celebrated their victory.  After all, what would a physics teacher know.

IMMUNISATIONS – YEAR 7 & 10

Parents of students in Years 7 and 10 are reminded once again of the importance of returning consent cards for their child’s immunisation even if not giving permission for their child to be immunised.  While our preference is that every child be immunised and that the scientific evidence undoubtedly supports this as an important priority for the health of our community, we recognise and respect every parent’s right to choose.  However, we do want consent cards returned to indicate what decision you have made for your child.  There are financial rewards for our school community if we reach 95% return of cards and this money is invested in shade sails and seating for our students – your children.  At present we have only 53% of Year 10 cards returned.  We are looking better at Year 7 with 75% returned, but as you can see, we still have a long way to go.  Please contact the school if you have lost your card.
