POLICY PRATTLE
This year I will be featuring various policies that are used at the school to guide some of our practices.
ALLERGIES & ANAPHYLAXIS
We have a number of students across the school that have allergies that can cause anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life threatening. These students can have severe or life threatening reactions to a variety of triggers, such as particular foods or environmental factors. Photos and information of every student who fall under this category are placed in each classroom and specialist area. All identified students have an action plan and Epipens are placed in a secure and central location. Teachers monitor all students at eating times and we discourage any swapping of food by students. While students at risk of anaphylaxis are very good at knowing what they should not eat or touch, we can all minimise the potential for a reaction by limiting the types of food you allow your child to bring to school, in particular, high content nut products.
With this in mind we also request that birthday cakes/cupcakes/lolly bags are not brought into school to share with students. Teachers are happy to celebrate children’s birthdays with a song, and if parents wish the sharing of a non-food gift such as balloons/pencils/stickers. This also applies to Easter and Christmas celebrations.
We thank you for your understanding in helping to ensure the continued well-being and health of all our students.
SCHOOL UNIFORM AND SUNSMART
As everyone heads back to school and teachers create expectations with their students for the year ahead, it is timely to look at our SunSmart practices and Uniform Policy. Late last year Michele and I met with a select number of students from the upper middle and senior school to hear their voice on the topic of School Uniform. We were pleasantly surprised by the students’ favourable attitude towards wearing a school uniform.
As well as identifying why schools have a uniform and the benefits, we also discussed the expectations around wearing the school uniform. As a group we discussed a variety of uniform rules, many of which are designed for student safety and protection, such as the wearing of suitable footwear and sun hats for running and playing outdoors, to oversized bows and accessories.
We encourage all parents to read the Uniform Policy which was endorsed at last year’s November School Council meeting, with their child/ren. We look forward to seeing all of our students take pride in the uniform they wear and what it means to belong to our community. This was acutely evident as recently as yesterday when our senior students received their Yr 6 rugby jumpers, as well as last Thursday when our Preps started their first day at school. It is also timely to mention that school photos will be later this term.
The Anaphylaxis, Uniform and SunSmart Policies can all be found on the school website.
