The Little Scientists' program

The Little Scientists’ program

We as a school were lucky enough to be selected for the John Monash School of Science (JMSS)  ‘The Little Scientists’ program this term. It is a chance for a small group of Year 5 & 6 students to learn about the basics of Science from current students at the JMSS.

Here is what Phoebe thought of our first session:

‘The Little Scientists program last Wednesday was amazing! The four of us went with Mrs Bird to Monash University to learn more about Science and we definitely did. To start, the instructor asked us what we thought when he said science and to write it on the giant whiteboard in front of us. Some people said answers like biology and explosions but each group had lots of of ideas and drawings. We were then split into 3 groups and started doing experiments with magic sand, salt, water and metals that were lead by Year 10 and 11 John Monash students.

The magic sand experiment showed that the magic sand stayed dry and didn’t sink unless it was poured in continuously. When we went to the next table, they showed us the differences when aspirin dissolved depending on the size and that the water, if it was in a really small container couldn’t get poured out. The final experiment was with metal and how it went back to whatever shape it used to be in if it was dipped in hot water. After we did all the experiments, the teacher did some of his own experiments including one that frothed up and another that shot out water continuously.

Overall, it was so much fun and I can’t wait to go back!’
