Student Journalists

We asked our students to be journalists

We put out the call to our students to be involved in their school newsletter and asked them to respond to the question: What is it like to go to school at home? They responded in many different ways, showing creativity, resilience and a desire to succeed.

I would love to be a reporter; this is my dream. To interview other people on the TV. I don’t know if I can do it because of my English—so I have to study more.

English is hard. I try to catch up all my work and work hard. We have to try because English is the language of where we work in this community. English is a little bit hard—some words are easy, but some words are so long. Sometimes I don’t understand. When I know the meaning of the words, I can understand it, but if I don’t know the words, I can’t understand. Then I might ask my teacher.

This is the second language for us. In my TAFE class, I know the questions, but some parts I don’t understand. If the teacher keeps going and I don’t understand, I feel so bad. Sometimes I can’t do anything. I have such a bad feeling—other students are doing the work and I can’t. But then I say to myself, I have to try harder, I have to find out.

When people say unkind things about my English, I feel bad. Sometimes it is so hard and I tell myself, I will give up. But then I say, no, I have to try more.

My friends and I want to interview people around the school and listen to their hopes, dreams and concerns. I want to work so hard to do well and work in this community. Then my future will be comfortable and then I can serve in the school and community.

I thought of this idea because I wanted to show what I felt going through quarantine. In the photo I was looking at the clock and showing what my emotions were. Every day throughout quarantine it feels like we are locked up in jail and the time is passing by very slowly. So the point of this photo is to show that we probably all look at our clocks at one point, every single day and just stand there and just pray that COVID-19 goes away.

Students right around the world have shared their online schooling experiences and have concluded that they’d rather go to school then stay at home! Online learning has been a new concept that the education system and families right around the country have had to adapt to in a very short amount of time.

At times lessons become very confusing when there are so many platforms we have to use for different subjects, however our teachers fully supported us through each day of learning and provided us opportunities to make the most out of our learning during these difficult times. However confusing this online learning experience may have been, staying at home had many perks as well. Getting an extra hour of sleep, not having to wear school uniform and having hot lunches are all some things I’ve experienced, to name just a few.

I would like to thank education departments and parents right around the world for supporting us to continue our learning despite current situations and I’m sure we’re all feeling excited to find out that schools around Victoria will be opening very soon!

Hi, everyone.

Hope you doing well.

As you can see like everyone else I am going to school even though I am at home.

I know it sounds strange, but it’s been really cool for me. I wake up in the morning do what we usually do, then go to my room and start my day. When it is recess time, I will have a little break from laptop. After recess time I would then go back to class to learn the two lessons. At lunchtime I would go out have some fresh air and kick some soccer which keeps me motivated. After that I would go back to class for the last lesson of the day and then finish my school day.

Overall learning from home is really simple if you have something that keeps you motivated because at school you have friends who keep you awake, but at home you have to keep yourself awake. You have to always remember why you go to school, and you use that as a something that would keep you going to reach your aim.

Getting creative

Some of our students took the time to write a poem or a story about their favourite books.

Be yourself

This is a world for you

So try to be true

Never have the fake smile

Because it is against your style

Be who you are meant to be

Because it is absolutely free

Take everything as a gift

Because it might disappear in a swift

Always have in mind

That you are not behind

One day the world might destroy

And for sure you’re gonna miss the joy

You can shine like gold

Because nothing is old

This is your lovely life

So you should be as sharp as a knife

You are supposed to move

Just so you could improve

Take the wonderful advantage

And never try to manage

Always be encouraged

Because it can make you nourished

Never attempt to repel

When you can be yourself
