Music: The Wizard of Oz

by Karoline Kuti, Music Coordinator and teacher of Music

Braving the cold on Wednesday 13 June, students headed into the city to the majestic Regent Theatre on Collins Street to watch a performance of The Wizard of Oz. There was a buzz of excitement as for some this was their very first professional musical theatre experience, and being in such an ornate and beautiful building was super special.

As the lights went down and the overture began we were all transported to Kansas where a storm was brewing. Pyrotechnics, projected images, swift set changes, elaborate costumes, beautifully performed music and an age-old tale had us all engaged and enthralled until the very end.

There was plenty of inspiration with which to design our own musical and as a result students have created music theatre songs along the themes of bullying, fantasy, the Holocaust and the assassination of John F Kennedy.

Exploring storytelling through music theatre has been a real joy for everyone.
