Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year Celebrations

This year is the Year of the Rooster according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. It is the tenth year in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac.  At Wantirna College we recognise and respect the cultures and traditions of our local communities and organised several activities during the Chinese New Year period to celebrate Chinese New Year. The Year 7 and Year 8 students designed and drew the character “福” (fu, meaning 'Happiness', a traditional Chinese New Year paper decoration that can be found on the external door in every household) and a rooster pattern. These are currently on display on a red banner near the main office. All students had the opportunity to visit the library to have their names written in Chinese using Chinese paint brush and find Ms Walker to learn and practice saying ‘Happy New Year’ in Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese). In the Science and Langauge Centre, Mr Qiu directed a dumpling-making demonstration with participation from Year 7 to 12 students including our international students from China. Some lucky spectators also won a box of dumplings! We wish our community a happy new year.
