Kitchen Garden

We had a lovely time in the kitchen garden this week with a beautiful sunny day and some eager year one students ready to get their hands dirty in the kitchen and in the garden. On the menu was a two ingredient recipe making bread rolls, and filling them with healthy choices from the garden including lettuce, cucumber, tomato, avocado, radish and some spreads.

Our focus this week in the garden was on the chickens, learning about how to care for them by providing shelter, food, water and exercise. We also harvested seeds from strawberries using toothpicks which was a very difficult task!

Thank you to....

A huge thank you to all the families that have provided us with rosemary and lavender. We are currently drying the herbs in readiness for making scented sachets to sell at the fair.

Another huge thank you to our school community chicken care helpers. Your help provided peace of mind for our school community knowing that our chooks were well cared for, fed, had fresh water and a chance to stretch their legs.

In particular we thank the following families:

Halvatzis, Rudzki, Bonnaci, Tzamouranis, Rico, Keele, Edouard, Nathan, Jackson, Fredericks, Tonelli, Hibbert-Howes, Fernandes, Kumar.

If you have any photos of you and your family helping with the chickens please email them to me adeegan@sjwheelershill.catholic.edu.au.

School garden helpers

We have some very keen helpers in our school who love to care for our garden by weeding during lunch time and ensuring balls do not go into the garden space damaging our plants. Lara P created a sign to help students be aware of the garden space and act accordingly. In her own time Lara created the sign and attached it to the garden fence today with her friends. Hopefully this will help to remind students to be careful when retrieving balls. Well done Lara and friends on being mindful about our environment.

Camp Australia

The lovely Susi from Camp Australia who looks after our children before and after school has a green thumb and a caring heart! With the help of the children Susi has been watering our garden beds in the mornings, and has also been nurturing some corn seedlings which have now been planted in our vegetable garden.  We really appreciate Susi's interest and help caring for our school garden. We are looking forward to seeing the corn grow and cannot wait to use it in our recipes.
