NEW INQUIRY CONCEPT - WONDERING

It was an absolute delight this week to have been invited into the Prep classrooms as they began the inquiry concept of Discovery, looking at what happens with the sky and the weather, as part of the Victorian Curriculum Earth and Space Science Learning Area. Students were given a provocation to start their thinking and wondering about the seasons, the weather, the earth, space and more. They "wondered" about the most amazing things...

  • How does the world spin around and the seasons change?
  • How does it get cold in Winter and warm in Summer?
  • How do we get day and night?
  • How do the seasons get their names?
  • How do the clouds change the weather?

This skill of wondering encourages children to be curious and to have an open mind; to think openly about anything with regard to new learning before being led in a certain direction. It helps students pose questions about what they are about to learn and extends the possibilities and scope of their learning and they delve in and find out how to answer their questions. At all year levels we encourage wondering as part of our Inquiry Approach to learning so that we can begin learning from where children are at in a new topic. Thank you Year Preps for the invitation to join you in wondering!!

The following stations were used as provocations for the students to wonder about:
