VCAL - Term 3 Reflection

Victorian Electoral Commission Incursion

Late last Term, the Intermediate VCAL classes participated in an incursion run by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to discuss Australia’s democratic system and participate in a mock preferential vote.

Students were lead through the process of signing up to the electoral roll and considered Australia’s compulsory voting system.

Students voted for their preferred ‘Political Party’ from the following:

  • Legalising Marijuana for Recreational Use
  • Legalisation of the Death Penalty
  • Banning Nicotine
  • Lowering the Drivers Licence age to 17 years old
  • Lowering the Drinking Age to 16 years old

The winning party was ‘Lowering the Drivers Licence age to 17 years old’, who demonstrated the importance of a key issue affecting students completing work placements around Victoria through the VCAL program.

Students witnessed the process of counting votes to achieve an absolute majority, and asked insightful questions around the eligibility to vote and the process of completing a valid / invalid vote.
