GRADE 4 CAMP

Grade 4 camp
On the 12th of September, the Grade 4 students went to Camp Oasis for their second school camp. It was located in the Dandenong ranges of Mount Evelyn. The Grade Four students were at Camp Oasis for three days and two nights. Students had amazing meal-times and faced their fears with adventurous activities like the Reptile House, Crate Climbing and the Flying Fox! The grade four students also participated in line dancing and watched Sing 2. Ultimately everyone had an amazing time at camp. It was greatly enjoyed by all grade 4 students and teachers. Keep reading to find out more about what happened during grade four camp!
Candle Making
At Camp Oasis, my favourite activity was candle making. As I walked into the room, I smelt the scent of roses. The room was a third of the size of my classroom. After the instructor told us how to make a candle, we were bouncing with excitement. I however, accidentally dipped my fingers in the wax but luckily for me the wax was only lukewarm. I made a tall, plain white original candle. After we had finished, the teachers labelled the candles and put them in a cardboard box. After we came back to school, on Tuesday we found them in our classroom and brought them home.

At our entertaining camp, my excited friends and I participated in candle making! It was tremendously time-consuming and a patient job to do. You had to dip your wick into steaming hot, bubbly wax, then carefully lower your hot wick and wax into freezing cold water before you start the pattern again. I tried my best and the finished product ended up with an exceptional emerald apple with the wick protruding out of the tip.

Mealtimes
At mealtime we would have a lot of unusual eating times, for example, morning and afternoon tea and supper. That’s a lot of eating! Anyway, mealtime was about eating and making new friends. You might be wondering why or how you might make new friends. Well, the teachers make you sit on a table with a person you haven't already sat with, for example people from different classes or cabins. The food was also very important because there were very tiring activities and you needed a lot of energy for the next day.

Crate Climbing
Crate climbing was so fun but the highest you could go was sixteen crates. The high score started out as twelve, then someone in my group stacked thirteen but then I climbed to fifteen. I was very happy because my friend also achieved fifteen. Now you are probably asking if anyone climbed to sixteen, and yes, two people actually did. It was really fun.

On camp we undertook a task called crate-climbing. Crate climbing is a sport where you must partner up and label yourselves climber or passer. The passer’s job is to continuously pass crates to the enthusiastic climber. The climber’s job is to try to climb as high as possible. It was an experience worth remembering. My head beaded with sweat, fear clamped my heart and goosebumps crawled all over my skin. Even for me, every step took a lot of courage and effort. I am sure that some people felt the same after passing a certain number of crates. The maximum number of crates was sixteen crates high, and I succeeded in passing the number of crates that I thought I would only get, which was five crates high.

It was in the middle of the entire camp when my group saw exactly what we were going to do, crate climbing. We had to get into pairs in order for the activity to work. We also stacked crates to climb up. Once you stacked the crates, they lock in place, so we put our foot in the biggest gap and leaned forward to gain balance. If we weren’t able to gain balance, we could kick the stack down, so it toppled down to the ground. In the end my highest stack was seven crates.

Reptiles
After the slippery rain down the hill we finally arrived at the reptile house. First, we looked at all the animals around the reptile house. There were frogs, turtles, snakes and two types of lizards, the blue tongue lizard and frilled neck lizard. After that, we waited for Ash our instructor to tell us what to do. She said to sit in a circle so we did. She went away and came back with three blue tongue lizards which we all got to pat, they felt so smooth, silky and scaly. She put them away and brought out a turtle next. She said to be quiet and block the gaps so it couldn’t escape. Afterwards she put the turtle in the middle and after a while it came up to me and stared at me. I was close enough to pat it, so I did, and it felt so smooth. Next, she pulled out Sushi. Sushi is a black headed snake. Ash said to be quiet and you'll get to touch it. I held it right near its head and it was so cool! Camp was the best!

During camp we arrived at the reptile room and touched a scaly slithery snake called Sushi. We could also touch many interesting and slimy reptiles. The guide Ash told us that the frilled neck lizard loves watching TV. Next Ash said we could choose between a frog and a turtle, but of course we chose the turtle. The turtle had an eye contest with me, and I won because I am the champion of eye contests. After that Ash showed us the frilled neck lizard eating its favourite food which were yellow flowers. The last thing we did was to hold Sushi. He was one of the largest snakes I had ever seen. Sushi looked cool because he had a black neck, and the rest of his body was brown and very scaly.

At the end of camp, dodgeball skills were put the to test, students versus the teachers. Guess who won?
