GRADE 6 WAKAKIRRI
This year, our Grade 6 cohort participated in WAKAKIRRI. Wakakirri is Australia’s largest arts event for schools with over 180 taking part in 2022. Participating schools are inspired by the Wakakirri ethos ‘great stories inspire change’ to create and perform story dances that reflect students’ thoughts, ideas and aspirations.
Our story dance titled The Influence, explored the negative environmental effects of fast fashion. The message we tried to convey was that if we show fighting spirit, we can tackle consumer habits.
After our first performance at the Frankston Arts Centre, Wakakirri panel member, Kristin Wantenaar described our performance as ‘a very strong performance showcasing a very strong message.’ Our school received the following Performance and Production awards:
- Excellent lead cast
- Excellent supporting cast
- Excellent group dance
- Excellent theme/concept
- Excellent soundtrack mix
- Best lighting design and call
- Best minimal use of sets, props and costumes
We were also nominated for two major awards in the National festival, requiring us to perform again at the State Showcase, held at the Clocktower in Moonee Ponds.
It would give us great pleasure to show you our performance now.
Once all schools around Australia had performed the National Award winners were announced.
We are delighted to announce that Valkstone Primary School has been successful in taking home the National Story Award – for excellence in performing arts and raising awareness about Environment, in the annual Wakakirri Story Dance competition,
Festival Director Adam Loxley said “The Standard of performance and the stories being told by schools this year was exceptional so Valkstone Primary School should be very proud of their award.
GRADE 2 LOCAL COMMUNITY WALK
Last week, the Grade 2s set out on walking excursion through our local East Bentleigh community. As part of our Humanities unit "Looking at Community, Place and Belonging," we explored the local services and features including the butcher, post office and greengrocer.
