Year 11 Business Management Incursion

On Friday 7 October Ms Emirler's and Mr Anderson's Year 11 Business Management classes combined to listen to a presentation from advertising agency Trout Creative Thinking.

General Manager Lachie McKernan, Head of Brand Partnership, Camey O'Keefe and two of their colleagues gave students a fascinating insight into working at a creative advertising agency, analysed a number of branding campaigns with the students and demonstrated how the marketing and promotion concepts learned in class were applied in the real world.

The students then worked in groups to design their own creative concept, based around devising a challenge that could be used to raise funds through sponsorship to support the work done by Reach, a social enterprise that assists young people struggling with mental health issues. The students were very engaged and interested, and learned a lot from this incursion, and the presenters commented on how impressed they were with the students' questions and participation. Well done to all!

VCE Philosophy Excursion

Late last term, the Year 11 and 12 Philosophy classes attended an excursion to the University of Melbourne. They listened to a second year philosophy lecture by Dr Karen Jones. The lecture was focused on moral philosophy, looking specifically at an evaluation of Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative. Afterward, Dr Jones and some of her second year students stayed on for a Q&A.

VUSC students asked some fantastic questions from an interrogation into Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics to finding out more about life as a philosophy student at university. Dr Jones also shared extensively about the diverse fields of work her philosophy students go on to pursue after graduating.

While on campus, students also had the opportunity to meet VUSC alumnus Nam Do (Class of 2019) who is in his 3rd year of a Biomedicine Degree at the University of Melbourne. Nam shared with the students about his journey from studying VCE at VUSC to his current studies at the university. He also shared his enthusiasm for campus life and the many opportunities that exist at university. Nam offered support for students who are planning to study at the university after they finish Year 12.

Leadership Seminar - Junior Campus

On the 18th of October the Junior Campus SRC group had the opportunity to participate in a Leadership Seminar with Keisha Healy from VicSRC.

In this seminar the SRC group was able to learn and discuss about their personal goals and ambitions for the school, the freedom of student voice, the school curriculum and the abilities and rights we have being SRC students. In the Seminar the students were able to participate in group activities that allowed them to discuss the opportunities we get and how we can obtain more, the school curriculum and how we can extend it to adapt to our learning ways.

We got the opportunity to discuss the abilities we have as SRC and what rights we have. We also got taught how the government is promoting SRC’s to support them in school’s learning structures and how the point of view of students can be incorporated. We got to conduct many discussions relating to the student voice and how to be heard and our privileges as SRC’s and how we can use this to our advantage to support out peers. We discussed ideas we have to form a stronger community and ideas for the school as well as more opportunities for our students. We got to create new friendships and interact with our SRC group and all the different year levels within it and did some relationship bonding.

Overall, it was a great opportunity and a privilege to participate in. All the students involved enjoyed it. It was extremely beneficial, educational, and allowed us to have a better understanding on how we can make a difference to our school. Big thank you to Miss Wooles our Junior Campus SRC coordinator for making this experience possible!

Today I attended the Leadership Seminar with my peers from the SRC. It was great. We were challenged mentally during the two hours which expanded my thinking about certain ideas I had been sure about. Questions such as – ‘I have a voice in this school’ and a follow -up question – ‘everyone has a voice in this school’ really broadened my point of view by listening to different ideas from the groups and the group leader. Overall, it was a fun experience that I would recommend for all.
