Principal's Message

Dear Families,

It is unbelievable to think that we are now into term four with Christmas seemingly just around the corner! The holidays were no doubt a wonderful break for one and all, however in saying this, it is fantastic to be back at school.

On behalf of the staff, I would like to thank all parents and carers for your continued support of the school throughout the past three terms. Whether through your attendance at information evenings, attending Parent Teacher interviews online, communicating through Compass, or participating in parent meetings, I really appreciate and value the partnership we have with you. It is such an important part of the work we do together – guaranteeing the best possible education and pathways for your child.

Year 12 Students

Year 12 exams began on 26th October. All Year 12 classes have been revising the year’s work for the first two weeks of Term 4. It was most important that students were at school every day to review their year’s learning and gain feedback on areas to concentrate on to prepare for their exams.

Years 7 to 11 exams will begin soon after the Year 12 exams. If there are any students who haven’t completed their assessment tasks, they need to get these done very soon. Remember the quality of the work is most important so strong effort is essential.

Congratulations

A huge congratulations to Liam Benbow in Year 10 who competed at the Western Metropolitan Region Athletics competition late last term. Liam placed first in shot put and second in discus, a fantastic result which saw him progress to the State Championships last week where he competed in the Boys 16 Years Shot Put 5kg. Liam placed FIRST with a throw of 14.46m and is the 2022 State Champion! Well done Liam!!

Also massive congratulations to the Boys U16 Rugby League team who are State Champions for 2022! In a very one sided affair they demolished Narre Warren South College 30-0. The boys were very humble with the win and demonstrated great sportsmanship. They also showed plenty of skill and completely outplayed their opposition. Well done boys on this amazing achievement! Thank you to Mr Adam and Mr Swanson for coaching and supporting these students.

Young Researchers Presentation & Ceremony

On Thursday 13th October Mr Leyland and Ms Chapman attended the Brimbank Young Researchers Presentation & Ceremony Event with 21 Year 9 students at the Brimbank Civic and Community Centre. At this event our students presented their research reports to the Brimbank Councillors, staff and to the Swinburne University representatives.

Our students were amazing in the lead up to the day by living up to our school value, Aspire to Achieve, by rehearsing at lunch times to ensure their presentation on the day was top quality. Parents were also invited to attend and watch their child’s presentation.

The Young Researchers Program was delivered in collaboration with Brimbank Youth Services and with Swinburne University, their aim was to support young people in their learning of the fundamentals of research, such as ethics, how to perform qualitative research, analyse data and how to write a research report.

Our students had four sessions this year to prepare them for the Young Research Program. Our students developed a research topic, collected and analysed data from their research and developed recommendations to address their topics. Congratulations to all students involved in the program!

Year 12 Celebration Day

On Wednesday 19th October our Year 12 students celebrated their final day of school. Their costumes were creative and colourful, and the students, although sad at leaving enjoyed the wonderful breakfast organised for them. We then had a campus assembly to wish the graduating class of 2022 good luck with their chosen pathway and their exams. Thank you to the Senior School team for the organisation of a lovely day; and to the Year 12 students who celebrated with joy and respect.

Step Up Programs For 2023

This year all year levels from 7 to 11 will have their Step-Up programs commence straight after the exams. Our intent is to provide students with the opportunity to experience their classes for 2023.  This means that students have an idea of what to expect prior to starting in Term 1 next year. The program will be very successful in preparing students for the next steps in their secondary school journey and helping them to connect with their classes, subjects and teachers.  Those in VCE next year will have some homework to complete over the break but will still have plenty of time to relax and recalibrate prior to starting next year.

2023 Intentions

Term 4 is the term in which we begin planning for 2023. The key aspect of my planning is to ensure the provision of the widest and viable curriculum designed to cater to student pathways and choice. To assist with the planning for 2023, we ask that families who are aware that they may be transitioning out of Victoria University Secondary College to please let us know as soon as possible. We have a significant number of students on our waiting list, and this will allow us to plan effectively for our classes in 2023. If you are moving out of the area or your child is transitioning to a different educational provider, please let the following Leaders know:

Middle School Leader (Years 7-9) - Ms Brylee McNamara

Senior School Leader (Years 10-12) - Ms Anna Bonanno

Finally

A reminder that all students should be in full summer uniform in Term 4. Thank you as always for your support.

College Principal
