Foundation (Prep)

Literacy

After our visit to Edendale Farm last week, we wrote about many of the fun things that we experienced on the day. Students were encouraged to focus on their personal goals and to try to challenge themselves to include detail in their writing. Some children were able to do some of their personal best writing for the year!

We also continued Reader's Workshop and our Reading Program, with lots of help from our families. These are really enjoyable sessions and the children look forward to them. Thank you for the support from the Prep C families for helping to make these reading programs work so well.

During our handwriting task for the letter Rr, a number of Prep C students have shown greater confidence this week and worked very well independently. We celebrated their efforts in class. Well done Oscar, Harry, Tom, Iliya and Tayo. Super job!

Maths

During our number topic this week, the students were introduced to Division. In Foundation, the concept is introduced as 'shared between' and is taught as if telling a story. For example, Mrs Callaway had 12 lollies. She gave 3 to Oscar, 3 to Jasmin, 3 to Isla and 3 to Fintan. How many lollies did the children get each? As students became confident with the concept, they were encouraged to have a go at some independent problems. Those that were still grasping this new understanding, worked together with me in a guided teacher group.

Recycled Robots

As mentioned before, our Inquiry topic has focused on recycling and reusing to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. It was also letter Rr week in Prep so combining Inquiry and Literacy we decided to make our own robots from recycled materials. Thank you to Prep C families for helping the children prepare for this activity. It was great fun and I was impressed with the creativity and independence that all students demonstrated throughout the task. Please enjoy some photos of our recycled robots.

I hope you all enjoy the longer weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone next week.
