Term 3 Enrichment Program (7-10)

Term 3 Enrichment Program (7-10)

The Enrichment Program for students in Grades 7-10 is a wonderful opportunity for Secondary students to get involved in an alternative program, engaging in activities and with teachers that they do not usually get the chance to meet and engage with. It’s about learning new skills while having fun!

This term, it will take place on Thursday 29 September and Friday 30 September. Students will need to choose one event for Thursday and one event for Friday. Places on each event are limited. A Consent2Go will be sent to all parents and carers which will include a booking link for activities. The link will open at 7:00pm; 24 hours after the Consent2Go is sent.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment Camp

Last weekend three SCC Grade 9 students, Jenna Aschmann, Hyland Smith and Angus Richardson, were nominated by the School to attend the Rotary Tasmania Lifeskills Weekend Workshop help at Camp Clayton in Ulverstone.

Here are some student reflections from their experiences.

"For the first little while, we just huddled in our own little corner away from everyone, too scared to branch out and make friends, but then we established friendships over intense Uno games, meals, and inside jokes, and everything became a lot more bearable. I’m glad I could appreciate all the important skills we were covering in innovative and interesting ways. We discussed topics like stress, the importance of communication, active listening, teamwork, and so much more.

I found a strange sense of confidence talking to strangers which surprised me. I really enjoyed playing the different games and finding the loopholes that the leaders wanted us to find. At the beginning of camp, I felt an overwhelming sense of insecurity but as time when on I started to make friends and become more comfortable when interacting with people I didn't know. I gained a lot of insight into building new friendships and strengthening the friendships that I already had.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have and benefit from this experience and will cherish the memories and friends that came out of it for as long as I can. Overall, the RYPEN camp was a very enjoyable experience and would go again if the opportunity came up."

Grade 8 Science Students' Energy Unit

As part of the Science unit on energy, Grade 8 students learnt about the various types of energy and how efficient the transformation of energy is in everyday electrical appliances such as a hairdryer, toaster and different light bulbs. The concepts of gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy were investigated using an online PhET simulation of a roller skater/skateboarder where variables could be manipulated to determine the most successful skatepark. The starting height and mass of the skater could be changed as well as the presence or absence of friction - in this online world, one can skate forever!

The final challenge was to design and create a paper rollercoaster to carry a marble along a path without falling off and as far as possible. Students worked in groups to think about a suitable starting height and how that would affect how much potential energy the marble would have to be transformed into kinetic energy to travel a certain distance.
