Grade 4/5 Cilliers News

Writing Skills

The past few weeks the grade 4/5 Cilliers class have been working on newspaper writing and information writing skills. The students worked cooperatively, motivated and stayed focused on the tasks at hand. Our class wrote “real-world” newspaper stories and information reports. During lessons students practiced important writing skills and learned valuable writing tips, editing their own writing, adding graphics and captions and writing a headline.

Gratitude

We have been focusing on how to be grateful and what it means as Christians to be grateful. Students looked at the Bible and highlighted some verses about gratitude as we discussed the meaning of these verses.

Psalm 9:1

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;

I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

Psalm 100:4-5

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

We learned that gratitude is a skill. An attitude of gratitude is a positive way of looking at life. Gratitude can increase our happiness, teach us to be more empathetic, and help us to be more thankful for everything we have. Students created posters about being grateful or thankful.

As we make holiday plans, we should take the opportunity to rethink gratitude, what we’re thankful for, and teach our children to appreciate what they have.

It has been a wonderful experience for our class to be part of the SCC community who collected a lot of items for Operation Christmas Child. The Shoebox project, which involves filling shoeboxes with gifts to be distributed by Samaritan’s Purse to needy children in Australia and around the world for Christmas. This was an exciting and valuable opportunity for us to put into practice many of the lessons we have been learning about gratitude, respect for others and compassion.

Swimming Program - Prep-Grade 3

A letter was sent home last week confirming the details of the swimming program.

Non-Swimmers: Students who are unwell are discouraged from attending school as per our normal policies. Should a child have a condition that still enables them to attend school, but prevents them from swimming e.g., an injury, they will come along to the pool and watch their peers. We ask you inform the teacher by email should there be a reason your child is a non-swimmer that day.
