From the Senior Sports Master

This weekend sees the conclusion of our Summer Season sports with our 2nd XI cricket team playing their ISA final at Oxford Falls and 8 of our ISA basketball teams playing in finals out at Penrith.  Congratulations to all those boys who were successful in reaching the finals.  Congratulations should also go to all our players for their outstanding representation of the College throughout the season.

Please ensure your sons arrive for their games in a timely fashion with the correct uniform and equipment for their respective sports.

The ISA has a full set of COVID-19 protocols which are attached to this document for your information.  If you intend to spectate at the finals there is a limit on spectator numbers. Entry to the basketball venues will require spectators to wear an ISA-issued wristband that will be provided to your sons at Assembly on Friday morning.   The basketball venue is operating a "get in, play, and get out" policy and we ask you all to assist with this by leaving the venue immediately after your son's game has concluded.

Please be reminded that the College subscribes fully to the ISA Code of Conduct.  This code applies to players, officials and spectators.  It is also attached for your information.

ISA Division 2 Final – 2nd XI v St Andrew’s Cathedral College @ Oxford Falls #1 this Saturday!

Congratulations to the 2nd XI on winning through to the Final. See attached Match Report – special mention to Josh Overton (Year 12) on a magnificent 101 and Ben O’Rielly on a fantastic 74*.

ISA Round 5 – 1st XI v St Gregory’s College at Oxford Falls #1.

1st XI was at home for the final round of the Term 1 ISA competition. Fielding first, the home side faced stiff resistance from the St Gregory’s top order who reached 1 for 49 before Liam Kinna (3-33) broke through. James Power (1-10), Brad Power (2-3) and Joe Colgan (3-11) followed this up with quick wickets before Riley Kennedy (1-1) took the final wicket with his first time at the bowling crease for three seasons. The opposition was dismissed for 96 in the 36th over.

After an early wicket Joe Colgan (39) and Keelan Mendel (39 not out) put on a partnership which featured some splendid strokes. Riley Kennedy’s shot through the covers brought the victory in the 23rd over to complete the shortened season for the St Pius X 1st XI in fine style.

This matched the conclusion of ISA Cricket for: Liam Chang, Joe Colgan, Liam Kina, Riley Kennedy, Bradley Power, James Power, Nicholas Ward and Thomas Wunsch.

Basketball

Thanks to a everyone for their efforts throughout the 2020 – 2021 season. Unfortunately we will not be running a Basketball Presentation Evening this year, however, we will be presenting our trophy winners to the school assembly and we plan to live stream the ceremony so that parents can watch the presentation online.

Eight teams will be playing a Grand Final this Saturday. All games are at Penrith Basketball Stadium, Herbert St Cambridge Park. Please see the Senior Sports Master section of this Woodchatta for more information regarding spectators on the weekend.

The ISA has a full set of COVID-19 protocols which are attached to this document for your information.  If you intend to spectate at the finals there is a limit on spectator numbers. NSTA Tennis

It was perfect weather for playing tennis on Saturday. We were so lucky to have the help of the Senior boys again coming early and helping out at the 8.00 am games: Richard Gauci, Nick Arena, Aiden Parsons, Alex Vaccher and Jamie Leong. I cannot say enough how helpful these boys are on the courts, especially for our green ball players. Thanks also to Mrs Keighery who travelled to Northbridge courts to support our two teams who were playing there today due to no spare court space at Talus Street. Sam Lodge and Jonathon Webster (SPX 19) proved to be a strong team winning all 3 sets to Redlands 26. Freddie Allert and Ethan Li (SPX 14) also had a great morning in their games against Redlands 19 also winning all 3 sets.

The roll over into the 10.00 am games was a smooth one. Well done to Boston Bannister and Jake Yu (SPX 9) two Junior boys who faced two Year 11 boys from Cammeraygal and won their match to secure a place in the final for their team. Jarred Lam and Ryan Fong (SPX 4) played Izaac Tan, Antony Autore and James Higgins (SPX 5) and despite Izaac taking his singles 6-4, SPX 4 took 2 sets to steal the win. Lucas Youngman and Aiden Seifert (SPX 6) were out for the win against Adrian Yip and Zach Fourie (SPX 8) winning all 3 sets.

Next week all players will be involved in the finals and play-offs, it is going to be a great day! Please keep and eye out on Xpoint for the draw for next weekend.

CSDA Public Speaking and Debating Competition and SDN Debating Competition

CSDA Public Speaking

Congratulations to our Public Speakers for their amazing resilience in approaching a changed timetable for last Friday’s Zoom event. A special mention to Anthony Parissis, Year 8, who chose to present in the Year 10 room and to Cavan Ryan, our Year 10 first time speaker and Max Leo who were put into the Year 12 room.

The scathingly brilliant Jose Monk, Year 9, has moved through to the Public Speaking Zone Finals which will be held this Friday March 12. This will be a Zoom event run from St Pius X College.

CSDA Debating Competition

Training for the above debating competition commences this Friday.  ALL debaters are to come to B10 at 3.15pm on Friday afternoon.  Coaches will take students to their training rooms and you are expected to attend until 5pm.  Year 7 students return from camp on Friday afternoon so it is OK if parents would prefer them not to attend training this week.

The 2021 Debating season kicks off this term with:

Week 7 – training Friday 12 March 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm

Week 8 – training Friday 19 March 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm

Week 9 – training & pre-season ‘Friendly’ Debates (to be confirmed) 3.30 pm - 6.00 pm

Week 10 – training & pre-season ‘Friendly’ Debates (to be confirmed) 3.30 pm

The CSDA Competition commences in Term 2. See the following dates.

Coaches for 2021 are:

Year 7   Joshua Foley (ex SPX student debater who coached in 2020)

Year 8   Ms Leigha Zervakos

Year 9   Leo Lovesy (ex SPX student debater who coached in 2020)

Year 10  Mr Justin Donnelly

Year 11  Luke McManus (ex SPX student debater 1st year coaching)

Year 12  Mr Ryan Balboa

We are so lucky to have ex-students to work as coaches as their experience as debaters is still fresh and the younger students really enjoy contact with our ex-debating “champions”. All of our coaches are also adjudicators which means that their feedback to their teams is timely and specific.

The fee for the CSDA extra-curricular activity is $150.00 which will be included in your Term Two school fees. We keep our fees as low as possible and have funding from the St Pius X College P & F to subsidise the costs of running debating at SPX.
