Numeracy Fun in Year 3
The Year 3 students have continued their exploration in Number and Algebra, with a focus on addition and number facts. In Measurement and Geometry students have focussed on length and measurement.
Number Games
The Year 3 students have been practising their recall of number facts while playing different card and dice games in small groups. This is a fun way of practicing for speed and accuracy. Students need to share their strategies as they reach correct answers.
Hands on Measurement
Year 3 students embarked on a classroom scavenger hunt to find objects that represented different measurements in the classroom. Estimating, using rulers to measure and compare enables students visualise measurement with greater independence and accuracy.
Fact families
Fact families are a group of math facts or equations created using the same set of numbers. In an addition and subtraction fact family, there are four addition and subtraction sentences. Students had to find class members who had cards that belongs to their fact family.
Exploring regrouping
Students used MAB blocks to understand the base ten system when regrouping when solving addition equations.
What is ‘Number Task?’
Most Math lessons begin with a class brainstorm on ‘what we know’ about different numbers and equations. This is a great way for students to share different strategies or number patterns they know with their peers.
Measurement Rotations
Students worked through measurement rotations inside and outside the classroom this week. Through lots of laughter, ovals, basketball courts,2D shape, student’s heights and a range of other objects were estimated and then measured.
“I liked doing the measuring of perimeters” – Aahil
“I liked going across the oval with the trundle wheel” – Curtis
“When I was measuring people, my estimate was close to the actual length” – Ava
“I was proud of myself when my estimate was close” – Olivia
“The games were challenging but fun!” – David
“It was fun when we got to run across the oval and measure” - Isabelle
