Year 2- Not Enough Hours In The Day!!!!!!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Year 2 and we are so proud of the learning our students have been completing. They are displaying greater independence and also working well in pairs to complete certain activities.

We have now finished revisiting the Daily 5 through explicit teacher modelling of the expected behaviours and students having time to practise the expected behaviours.

The Daily 5 components are:

1. Read to self

2. Read to someone

3. Listen to reading

4. Work on reading

5. Work on writing

It has been pleasing to see the student’s reading stamina increase during read to self.

The students thoroughly enjoy listening to a story using the school laptops and their headphones. We also introduced our word work tubs for the students to complete a variety of activities using their weekly SMART spelling words.

We have continued to focus on capital letters and full stops, paying particular attention to using capital letters for proper nouns. The students have been completing several games and activities.

We have sent off our first letters to our pen pals at Beaumaris Primary School and the students are eagerly waiting a reply. The students wrote excellent letters and asked their pen pals a variety of questions. This activity was also our first learning task for the year which teachers have already provided feedback on.

This week for Maths, the year two children have continued to be busy making resources for their individual maths kits. They cut out MAB hundreds, tens and ones to add to their kit. In the maths kit the children will also have a number line, a 120 number chart, a place value chart, ten frames and MAB hundreds, tens and ones.

We went on a scavenger hunt, looking through shopping catalogues to find certain numbers such as those which had 6 in the hundreds place or 8 in the ones place.

We played a game in pairs called “Picking Places” where the children took it in turns to spin a number three times. The first number was the hundreds, the second was the tens and the third was the ones. Each child needed to record their number two ways: how many of each value there was as well as the extended notation of the number. They then also had to record whether their number was larger or smaller than their partners.

The students have been totally engaged in our first Unit of inquiry and have enjoyed meeting the various characters from the Inside Out Movie. So far we have met, Joy, Sadness and this week we are meeting Anger. The unit is helping to teach the students how to manage their own emotions.

What a joy! The first character the children have been learning about is ‘Joy’. We have been discussing what it means to be joyful, sharing times they have felt joyful and discussing things we can do to change our mood to make ourselves feel joyful. The second character we have been learning about is ‘Sadness’. The student’s talked about times they have experienced this emotion. We are all enjoying this unit immensely and it has been heartening to listen to the children sharing various stories.
