REFLECTION

Year of St Joseph

Pope Francis has a special devotion to St Joseph.

“I have great love for Saint Joseph, because he is a man of silence and strength. On my table I have a statue of Saint Joseph sleeping. Even when he is asleep, he is taking care of the Church! So when I have a problem, a difficulty, I write a little note and I put it underneath Saint Joseph, so that he can dream about it! In other words I tell him: pray for this problem! …" (Sermon of Pope Francis, January 16, 2015 (Philippines))

We learn about Joseph as a dreamer, one who experiences dreams in times of challenge.  There is a strong message for us all to allow ourselves to be renewed through our dreams.  We are encouraged to be open of mind so we can discern God's will.  Sleeping is the perfect opportunity to surrender our cares to God in exchange for dreams.  Dreams give us an opportunity to listen to God.

PRAYER

St Joseph,

You were receptive to God working in your life,

Help us by your prayers in times of trial.

You kept Jesus and Mary under your watchful care:

may your prayers assist us to respond to those in need.

You taught the christ Child your trade and prayers:

help us follow his example of love.

You were part of God's plan for all humanity:

assist us to be vigilant and responsible this day.

You spent your life in service:

may we be mindful of others, particularly the

elderly and vulnerable, caring for them in difficult days.

You rusted in the clear primacy of God over all

history and every situation: help us grow in faith

and pray to the Father, Thy will be done.

Amen
