Classroom News - Year 6

Mr Garraud & Mrs Walters

Welcome to Term 2!

We hope that you and your families have had a restful break: enjoying some sun, resting at times, creating new things, and visiting people you love spending time with!

We look forward to another term of hard work filled with a few carnivals, exciting learning experiences, and some fabulous reports to send home to you!

English - The craft of Persuasion

In English, we are learning how to write persuasively and use persuasive devices to help us persuade. The persuasive devices we have looked at so far are: high modality, repetition, emotive language, personal pronouns, facts and statistics, rule of three and repetition.

We had a very exciting letter arrive last week from a school in southwest France. The letter was from a small Ursuline school and the students told us about the actions they are taking to live out the Ursuline motto of Serviam. We are going to use this letter as stimulus for us to write a persuasive letter to our new pen pals trying to convince them to visit us in Armidale. We are currently working on the different features that Armidale has to offer and the different techniques we can use to convince people to come.

Maths - Using the 4 Operations to understand electricity bills

In Maths, the current unit 'It's Electrifying' will link our science unit with mathematical problem-solving skills. The students will refine their skills in the four operations to then complete the final project of creating their own Electricity bill. Students have looked at the multiplication and division of numbers by 10s, 100s, and 1000s and developing their mental strategies so that they complete these problems. This week we have begun to work on addition and subtraction skills. We will complete the unit by working on multiplication and division skills. Be ready for conversations in your home about how many appliances are running, the level of electricity use in your homes, and possibly how you can reduce your usage.

Religion - Easter and The Risen Lord

Students will unpack: The Easter event, which caused great confusion for the followers of Jesus; After his Resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven to prepare a place for us; As Christians, our belief and hope is that we too will rise to new life with Jesus.

CAPA: Drama Focus - Energy of a Nation

This Unit is built on the theme of ‘Energy as a Nation’ using the creative art forms of Dance and Drama to explore the experiences of Energy. It has two distinct sections: Energy in the form of Human beings, and energy in the form of Light generated.

In Section One, through Drama students will explore and manipulate the elements of Dramatic tension and mood. Students will explore various characters depicted as immigrants and build empathy for these people through various dramatic tools, games, and techniques. This concept links to our content in History.

We really enjoyed our first lesson today using drama techniques of role on a wall, freeze frames, and thought tapping. Ask your student about these techniques!
