Year 1/2 Unit of Inquiry

Since returning to school we have been very hands on and busy with our unit of inquiry "How the world works" where we have been learning about the process of inventing, how inventions have changed the world and how inventions can help others.

Through a variety of activities we have developed a deeper understanding of how the world works. We started with discussing what we think it means to be an inventor, explored inventions in our house and solved current world problems through our inventions. When we returned to school we actively participated in a mystery box challenge where there were different recycled materials and we had to use these materials to invent something really cool. We were given a time limit to create inventions such as robot heads, parachutes and a flying pizza delivery.

To conclude our unit of inquiry we got to plan, design and create our own inventions using many resources and materials. Before creating our inventions, we drew and wrote about our inventions through either procedural texts or advertisements. We got to present our awesome inventions to the Prep class and the Year 3/4 class in our very own inventor exposition.

We are really proud of our inventions and we have developed reflective, creative and open-minded skills. We are looking forward to the next unit of inquiry "Sharing the Planet," where we get to develop a deeper understanding of the connection between all living things and how they are dependent on each other.
