Term 3, Week 7

Home Learning

Home Learning

Thank you for another great week of Remote Learning. The students are working hard and submitting work to a good standard. As always, please read through all the information included in this weekly Newsletter as well as the Compass Newsfeed, as it contains more specific information about Home Learning. We will also share this information through posts on the Grade 6 Cohort Google Classroom.

We thank you for your continued support and please don't hesitate to contact us via compass with any questions or queries.

GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:

NOTE: It is a requirement for all students to attend their Google Meet sessions each day.

Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. This term we will be running more small group Google Meet sessions. It is an expectation that your child attends their sessions each week.

English

Reading

This week the student's will be studying the Author's message Author's Message. An author's message is the "big idea" of the text or a part of the text. It is what the author wants the reader to learn or take away from reading the text. There may be more than one message in a text. It is important to understand why an author is writing something. As a reader, knowing the purpose or intent that the writer has for creating the piece of work helps the students EVALUATE it better.

Writing

This is the final week of our unit on ‘The Writing Process’. This unit has taken students through the process of planning, drafting, revising, and polishing a narrative piece. This week students will complete, revise and publish their narrative.

They will self-review their own work using the assessment rubric to ensure they have included all required elements. Students will also share their work with a classmate and conduct a peer-review, before submitting their published narrative.

Mathematics

This week, the students will begin a new topic - Patterns and Algebra. They will be looking at different number patterns and how to use algebraic equations to help solve problems.

Included in the slides are some extension tasks and early finisher tasks. The students should be working through their My Numeracy goals, as well as using Mathletics and Prodigy if they have time.

Unit of Inquiry

Students will complete their summative task this week, which is based around an issue that was presented during the documentary 2040.

Students will choose an issue they would like to focus their summative on from one the big issues from 2040. They will create a table of actions, skills & interests and creative ideas to support their issue and action. Students will create an action that supports their big idea/issue and upload it in a form of their choice for example a Padlet, video, poster etc.

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day, both in the morning and again in the afternoon, to see if new information or tasks have been added.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students and these are shared on the students' weekly timetable. Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.

Hearing Unit

Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
