Sport

Isn’t a week a long time in these strange times! After my sports report highlighting all the positive return of some of our school and community sports, it is all off.

I encourage the students to keep active whether it is doing some general fitness activities or participating in favourite recreational activities they can do under the COVID restrictions. They might also want to start looking forward to their summer sports and doing some skills training for these.

The House Sports that were lined up to be done in the next 5 weeks at lunchtimes will be rescheduled for Term 4 if restrictions allow.

Stay healthy, positive and active!

News

Congratulations to Year 12 students Ellie Jeal and Millie Austin who are the 2020 College recipients of the prestigious “Australian Olympic Change Maker Award” – formerly known as the Pierre de Coubertin Award.

They were selected after “demonstrating the Olympic spirit through leadership and driving positive change in their communities”. Ellie was awarded for her inspiring involvement in racquet sports and Millie for her dedication to swimming and Berry House.

In basketball news, I would like to congratulate Toby Vallance and Mitzi Adamson who have been appointed as Basketball Captains for the next 12 months. Both students have been highly engaged in the College basketball program over many years as players and coaches and we look forward to what they can bring to the role.

Hockey

We have been spoilt by the weather for the opening weekends of the season! Whilst cold for the evening session on Friday and first thing Saturday morning, last week was again dry and, by later on Saturday morning, pleasantly warm.

This has allowed some fine hockey to be on display and for students to continue showing how much they were valuing the opportunity to run around, play together and develop their skills.

Lions recorded their second tight win of the season, again in a superb game where both teams played open, fast-paced and clean hockey.  Rosie Dopheide celebrated her birthday early with a neat goal on the far post following excellent lead-up work by Ferg Roberts.

Tigers were held to a draw, 2-2, by Monivae.  The team was slow to settle into the game but controlled most of the second half.  Eren Zehir and Chloe Russell (after some effective penalty corner work with sister Phoebe) were the goalscorers.

Particular praise should be given to goalies, Ashleigh McNaughton and Gabe Marshall, for their efforts in these matches and for several fine saves each made last Friday.

In the Under 16 competition, Pumas played their first game for the season after their first-round bye.  Goals to Phoebe Russell, Ciaran Nelson and Finley McLindin saw them record an impressive 3-0 win over Monivae.  It was good to see Dominic Wong make his hockey debut in this match!  This team played some very good hockey,

Leopards lowered their colours to an impressive Coleraine team, which won 4-1. Several of the Coleraine team are College students – as they played so well, we will arrange detentions before any future encounter!  For Leopards, Rosie Dopheide continued her goalscoring weekend with another post deflection, this time from Isaac Hocking’s corner strike.  Will MacKellar made several good tackles, which was pleasing to see in his second game.

Once again, it was a delight to see so many students out enjoying playing hockey.  We were taking things one week at a time and planned to continue to focus on skill development at our combined training sessions.  Well done everyone!

We wrote the above message on Saturday.  Much has changed since then!  How lucky were we to have two wonderful weekends of quality hockey played in delightful weather?  We need to keep those great images in our minds until the next opportunity to play comes along.  Maybe we can manage a scratch match or two in Fourth Term.
