Queen Victoria Market Excursion for Economics
On Thursday 19 May, Year 10 and 11 students experienced the wonders of the Queen Victoria Market. For many this was their first time venturing in the historical building in the inner north of the city. On the day, students explored the many stalls and saw first-hand the operations of a marketplace.
Along with sampling local delicacies, the real purpose of the excursion was to observe how prices were set by different stalls owners. Students recorded and compared price differences between stalls and provided reasons for this phenomenon. Overall, the excursion provide students with a rich and memorable experience.

Winter Appeal Gratitude
An enormous THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the annual Winter Appeal.
After a slow start, the Nazareth Community rose to the challenge and once again, demonstrated incredible generosity. Staff and students alike donated both non- perishable food items and toiletries. A special mention to the VCAL class, who raised more than $400.00 from a sausage sizzle and then went shopping at Waverley Gardens to purchase their donations. We filled two trolleys! We would also like to thank the Pastoral Teachers who reminded their classes, on a daily basis, set up a tub/bags in their rooms and encouraged their students to be generous to others. Without them, the appeal would not have been as successful as it was. A final shout out to the ‘Amazing Vinnies,’ who always answering the call, are true role models and ambassadors for the Nazareth community.
Agnelo Miranda, from the St Gerard’s Parish, collected the items on Tuesday and was in awe of our collection. He was extremely grateful and wanted me to pass on his thanks to the entire Nazareth Community. The items will be distributed to those most in need over the coming months.
We have received the following letter from St Vincent de Paul Society.
Annual Winter Sleepout
On another note, the Vinnies will be holding the Annual Winter Sleepout on Friday 26 August (8.00 pm - 8.00 am). This is open to all students in the College. An entry fee of $10.00 is collected before the night and all funds go to SVDP who allocate funds to the Homeless. Students are encouraged to gain sponsorship from family and friends. They have a choice of sleeping in a tent, or in the gymnasium. There is currently a sign- up sheet outside Ms Douglass’s office, and this needs to be filled in so a PAM permission slip can be generated. The number of students will be capped, so do not leave this until the last minute.

Science
The Year 11 Chemistry students were very lucky to attend and participate in practical work at Chemistry Department at Melbourne University this week.
The 21 students used Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure the levels of iron and phenol in local water sources.
The students had access to the university demonstrators and expensive equipment to complete the task. Pipetting skills, the set up a calibration curve and calculations were essential skills practiced on the excursion. The students rose to the challenge, made mistakes and learnt from their errors.
It was interesting to debrief the following day – some students hated the practical environment whereas others loved the idea of working in a laboratory. All these experiences are important to enable informed career decisions in the future.
