YEAR 8 MEDIEVAL INCURSION

By Bryce Mcdowell (Year 8 Team Leader)

If you saw some students running around with long swords on Monday your eyes were not playing games with you. The Year 8's have been studying medieval history for the past term and we had our annual Medieval incursion. Students were able to experience four different workshops throughout the day which allowed them to experience many different aspects of life in medieval times.

One of the workshops was all about medieval music, students were able to see a range of musical instruments such as a hurdy-gurdy among others. They were encouraged with Latin songs and had a chance to dance together. Dressing up in costumes was par for the course with students dressing up as kings and queens or knights complete with chain mail.

There was a workshop all about Medieval warfare which students loved. Hearing about how exactly a medieval weapon would hurt someone seemed to really grab the attention of many students. They all grabbed shields and in groups had to create a shield wall with another group of students throwing tennis balls at them to find their weak spots.

The long swords mentioned earlier were not metal ones that students were fighting each other with, but rubber practice swords. Students had the opportunity to fight one on one with another student. Whilst the swords were rubber practice swords I can tell you that they still left a mark if one hit you. The marks left by these swords may have faded by now, but the memories of the day will certainly last a long time.

CSEN MASTERMINDS COMPETITION

By Allen Dickson (Learning Enrichment)

Masterminds is a bit of a mental pentathlon as our BHCS students are pitted against other schools in the subjects of English, Maths, Science, HASS and General Knowledge.

Our BHCS Primary Team – composed of select students from Grade 5/6 – competed valiantly and came runners-up. Congratulations to the following students who represented the school so well: Elsie deG, Jet R-S, Eddie D, Saartje C, Spencer K, Noah V, Emily C, Skye B and Ben C.

Our Senior Team, drawn from Years 8 to 11, pulled off a last minute comeback to finish just behind the winning two teams (who tied for first and went into 'sudden death').... particularly amazing considering several of the students balanced the competition with SACs! Congratulations to the team of Aaron K, Hayden W, Ben M, Bailey H, Hudson D, Toma C, Amelie deG, Jemima L, Tom L, Sarah R and Tom W.
