Around the Classrooms

Year 1 and 2

In our Literacy block, the students are learning about Mesopotamia’s (now known as Iraq) ancient civilisation! Students have been given an opportunity to learn about the roles the Mesopotamian people did to help form a civilisation.

In Numeracy, the students have begun to learn about fractions and how to read them. Students have explored new language of a fraction such as what is a numerator, denominator, whole fraction, part of a fraction, proper fraction and equivalent fraction. As well as this, students have explored different types of informal and formal measurements when they got to measure their teacher and themselves!

This week students get to dive into swimming! 1/2C, 1/2F and 1/2M swim at 11:15 to 11:45am, then 1/2S 11:45-12:15pm at Leisurelink in Waurn Ponds. Day one was fuelled by positive experiences and we can't wait to see the students' skills improve and start feeling confident around the water!

Year 3 and 4

It has been great to see all 3/4 students settling back into Term 3. We have had a very busy first week of learning.

Students in Literacy have been learning about Ancient Rome, learning about specific vocabulary and including it into their writing.

In maths 3/4s have been enjoying practising their times tables using a range of strategies. We encourage students to continue to practise their particular times table at home.

Senior students in Indigenous Studies this week have been learning about NAIDOC week which took place in the first week of July. Seniors learnt about why we celebrate NAIDOC week and how this week shows respect to all Indigenous people. Students researched an Indigenous Australian who won a award during NAIDOC week and why they were nominated for this award.

Year 4, 5 and 6

Literacy: In Grades 4/5/6, students have been learning about appositives during literacy. An appositive is a noun, followed by a noun phrase that provides more detail about the noun. Students have really grown with their appositive use, please see a list of appositives that have been used in reference to our class text that students created: Ming and Flo Change the world:

Ma, a lovely and ever so caring lady, was unfairly taken by the hands of death. (Eli)

The snake, a despicable and sly reptile, showed no mercy for flows ma. (Amelia)

Ming, a clever and intelligent girl, always put her hand up in class to ask questions. (Dustin)

Numeracy: In Maths students have been learning about fractions. Students have been counting fractions, as well as adding fractions with like denominators and converting improper fractions to mixed numerals. Please see some student work samples:

5/6A have settled back into the classroom nicely after holidays! We have started a new text in Content Knowledge, learning about the history and colonisation of Australia and how women were treated in the late 1800s/early 1900s. The students have also been learning about the elements of information reports and have begun drafting their own on a topic they are knowledgeable and passionate about. There has been a range of interesting topics chosen, ranging from favourite sports to black holes.
