Science Update

Our Year 8 science students have been exploring the health of our aquatic ecosystems.

They have been experimenting with how pollution can be introduced to and travel along river ecosystems and they have been conducting an extensive investigation into the effect of acidification on ocean ecology. Ocean acidification is primarily driven by changes in the atmosphere, with carbon dioxide absorption being one of the key factors.

In this experiment, students have modified the acid content of water and are examining the effect on the structure of shells and plants. The plants that look bleached and lacking colour are the ones in the more acidic environments. Students also spent some time learning how to communicate scientific ideas with the general public and produced a small card to promote river health.

Cards promoting healthy rivers.
