Grade 5 and 6 Zoo Excursion
On 9 June, the Grade 5s and 6s went on an incredible excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. We saw a lot of amazing animals such as lions, tigers, lemurs and even seals! We went to the zoo to learn more about Animal Adaptations, which is our Integrated topic this term.
After exploring the expansive grounds of the zoo, we had lunch and then a zoo employee named Katie talked to us about animal adaptations. She shared how we could identify between a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore just by looking at their facial features. We also held and examined the skulls of various animals, such as a monkey, snow leopard and koala. We even felt an enormous tooth from an elephant! Katie also showed us how the lemurs were fed. She scattered food pellets around the lemur habitat as we waited for the lemurs to creep out of their caves. After a minute, two mischievous lemurs scurried out and one started eating, while the other continued playing on a branch. It was very interesting and exciting to watch.
At the end of the day, we boarded the bus to go back to school, happy and filled with more knowledge of animal habitats and adaptations. It was a great and fun experience we learnt so much from. I am looking forward to more excursions like this one!
