News from the Science Lab

Our chickens have continued to grow and are all very healthy. Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep all of our chickens but we have kept three hens thanks to the generous offers of students and parents to assist with the care of our three little girls. We have kept Millie, Coco, and Lavender. Everyone was especially keen to keep Lavender - our smallest chick who is growing so well that she is now our heaviest chick. The chickens are now old enough to be outside during the day and we have set up a pen in the Science room courtyard. They can now get a lot more exercise and practice their flying.

Students are still keen to check their daily progress and growth.

Year 2 students have had great success with their mealworm breeding. They have now seen the entire life cycle of the darkling beetle. The students have demonstrated great responsibility by remembering when it is their turn to give their mealworms fresh apple which has been a source of water and food.

Year 6 students have been looking at microorganisms by conducting yeast experiments and investigating bread mould. They have also been working with dichotomous keys to help classify organisms.

Year 4 students have been collecting seeds from eucalypt trees around the school. We didn’t realise we had so many different types in the school grounds.

A small group of Year 6 students have been working with our Scientist and Mathematicians in Schools (SMiS) partner, Mr Darcy. They have been working with microprocessors and plan to present what they have designed and made to their class.
