Pen-Pals Room 24

Pen-Pals Room 24
Since the beginning of 2019 students in Room 24 have been writing to pen-pals at Williams Primary School. We were fortunate to have these rural students visit our classroom on 15th November. There was much excitement when they arrived and the day was incredibly rewarding to all the students.
Thank you to the awesome parents of Room 24 who provided a magnificent cultural spread of food to welcome and delight our visitors.
The following are a couple of recounts of the visit.
Our Pen-Pal Visit- By Annie
Hi, my name is Annie and I’m going to tell you about meeting my pen-pal Evie!
Our pen-pals come from Williams, a few hours away from here in Perth. She lives on a farm and that’s a whole different life to ours!
First, we sat down with our pen-pal and introduced ourselves to each other. My pen-pal has a really amazing life on the farm. My pen-pal is really nice and listened when I asked her questions. After we chatted and showed each other our books, we went out for recess. I showed my pen-pal around the school so she knew where the toilets were.
After recess, we went to Science. Fifty kids were in the Science Room. The chicks were in the Science Room as well, in a small area with food and water. We were also looking after mealworms! One group made sound sandwiches and the other group made rockets out of a straw, the last group held the chicks!
After Science, we had a big feast. I ate lots of yummy food! Yum! First, the Williams kids went up to get some savoury food and then the Burrendah kids. When everyone was finished we had some sweet things. We also each got juice boxes, so many flavours. Yum!
When we all had some lunch, for the last half an hour we showed our life with a USB presentation. Then we went back to play some board games. I felt a bit sad that my pen-pal was leaving soon. All the Williams kids got icy-poles.
I felt really happy that I got a day with my pen-pal.
Pen-Pal Visit – By Haoyang
On Friday (15.11.19) our pen-pals came to visit. My pen-pal is called Hugh, he’s eight and looks like Zac. We have been sending letters throughout the year and instead of writing, we got to meet them!
By the time we arrived at our classroom, our pen-pals were on the bus from Williams to Perth. At ten o’clock our pen-pals arrived after a two-hour trip.
When we sat on the mat Mrs Earnshaw read us a story called “Little Nic’s Big Day”. It’s about welcoming people from other cultures. Once the story finished it was recess.
Hugh and I played try not to touch the floor and had an Olympics race around the Year Two playground. By the time I collected the soccer ball, we started a match of 1-1 and the game ended up as a draw of 0-0.
Suddenly, the bell rang and interrupted us on the match. We went racing back to our class. In a flash, I grabbed my pencil case and lined up with my pen-pal and we went to Science. It was the day when most of the cute, little baby chicks were leaving. We opened the lid of our mealworm cage and there were seven pupae and three mealworms. My group changed the bran and fed them a fresh piece of apple.
We were able to do four activities but we only did two. One was the sound sandwich and the other the straw rocket. I made a sound sandwich which made the sound ‘blrrrrr’!
When we got back from Science it was lunchtime. I tasted a Lamington but it wasn’t good for me but I enjoyed most of the Chinese food. Then we went to the library and shared our PowerPoint with only out pen-pal. When we came back, we started playing board games, my game was International Chess.
Our remembrance of this day was a piece of wheat. Then our pen-pals farewelled us and left. I was really sad but life is life. It was the best day ever!
