In the Arts / Craft

ART

This is going to be another very exciting term in the art room. Students will explore Myths and Legends from around the world. All students will create clay creatures based on these stories using different clay techniques.

Prep to Year 2 classes

Students will focus on dragons, both European and Asian, exploring the texture and shapes found in these creatures. We will read some of the stories around these animals to discover the mystery of them.

Year 3 to 6 classes

Students will use the iPad to research a myth/ legend of their chose. These could be based on ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and Japanese or any other time/place they choose. Students will then go on to use the slab and coil technique to make “imaginary” creatures.

If you have any toy dragons/mythical sculptures, that you would be happy to loan to the art room, these would be greatly appreciated. I will look after them and make sure they are return to you at the end of the term.

Grade 6 students will also complete their community tiles that will be added to the other graduation tiles that are installed in our school grounds.

Foundation Year

Students will be introduced to the dolphin stitch to stitch butterfly wings that will be attached to term ones wet felted coils. They will also learn how to make pompoms by using traditional rhythmical, circular winding techniques to make the pom-poms. Students will then go on to explore finger knitting making long lengths to create an animal as decided by the class.

Class One

All students will begin work on their term two recorder bag project. Students will complete the recorder bag using the ‘fish’ stitch to depict a fish swimming down a river decorated with bridges. Those students in the class that made their recorder bag last year, will use the running and over stitch to create a hessian bag of their design.

Class Two

Student will be develop their knitting skills focusing on the garter stitch to make a knitted teddy/toy. They will learn how to count rows and create bands of colour.

Class Three/Four

Students will finish their felted craft work from term one referring to the Dreamtime story of “Bunjil the Eagle”. They will attach, by sewing, a found stick to their work, to create a hanging craft work. The class will then focus on developing and furthering their knitting skills by focusing on some elementary Fair Isle knitting techniques to create a knitted gnome.

Class Five/Six

Students will continue to work on their wet felted bowls to bring these to completion. Students will then begin work on their knitted project. This will involve students  doing their own research to create a knitted/crochet item of their choice. This may be a  soft toy, bag or clothing item.

All students will be given a few weeks experience working with clay. Themes will be based on main lesson, such as Ancient Egypt (5/6), Merri Creek Flora and Fauna (3/4). The younger classes will be looking at nature to inspire their clay works.

I am inviting all parents/carers and grandparents to come along each Tuesday to assist in the craft class. Students regularly need support in undoing knots or threading needles or assisting with other craft tasks. There is always a steady flow of student needing help throughout a craft session and this is where your assistance is invaluable. It is not necessary to be an expert to assist in the Craft program, as one just needs lots of patience, a caring nature and a willingness to help. You can ask your class teacher when your child has craft and just pop in to help out.

All visitors to our school need to go via the Front Office and sign in on the COMPASS kiosk and have a current Working with Childrens Check which is kept on file.

Arts Festival

Work has begun on our 2019 Arts Festival. If you are interested in assisting in any way please email me. Thank you for your support. Antoinette Vaiano,
