Womenjika (welcome) to the first edition of Dhumbadjirri {pronounced DTHOOM -ba-dji-rri}. Dhumbadjiri is a word from the Woiwurrung language (of the Wurrundjeri people) which means “talk together”.
The purpose of this new format is to showcase what is happening our students learning at Thornbury Primary School. Each month you will see examples of work of various types from many of our students. You can then have a conversation with your child about their learning.
Special Announcement
The State Government have announced that in the 2019 State Budget, Thornbury Primary School will receive an extra $80,000 towards fixing our leaking roof.
Our lovely old heritage building has a roof that leaks in many places. The cost of repairing the roof is very high due to the heritage nature and the equipment needed for the height of the building. This funding will be timely and is a start of repairing and restoring many areas of our school. I would like to thank the State Member for Northcote Kat Theophanous for her support and advocacy for our school. I will be working with the Victorian School Building Authority soon to begin the works for our roof.
NAPLAN
This month we have completed the NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3 and 5. Students across Australia are tested in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) are responsible for the development and correction of the tests.
The process for administering these tests are quite specific and I appreciate the understanding of our community and teachers during this time.
The results provide us with a good snapshot to see how Thornbury Primary School is progressing compared with the rest of the country. We can identify areas that we have missed and celebrate when our students achieve great growth. The data is released to schools in August.
2020 Enrolments
Many parents are asking me about enrolments for 2020. Our school is experiencing substantial growth and space is becoming an increasing issue.
This term the Department of Education (DET) have launched a website to the public to find their closest DET primary or secondary school. The website is www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au.
We are currently looking at new enrolment procedures and in 2020 places will be restricted. Existing students will continue to have a place at Thornbury Primary School. To provide the best possible chance for new students to have a place at Thornbury Primary School in 2020, we are asking families to complete an enrolment form by August. New students who are within the zone of Thornbury Primary will be offered a place in 2020. If you are outside our zone then other criteria will apply.
If you have any questions about new enrolments for 2020, please feel free to contact me.
