The Opening and Blessing of Workul Koo
On Monday 19 November 2018, we held the opening and blessing of Workul Koo in Terrigal. The shimmering sun, cool breeze and crashing surf brought a poignant truthfulness to our College theme of ‘Stewards of Creation’. If ever there was a setting where the ‘grandeur of God’ was on full display, it was here, on this special day.
Br Carl Sherrin told the gathering that 150 years ago, to the day, Br Patrick Ambrose Treacy set foot on Australian shores for the first time. Actually, he and three other brothers arrived on November 18 1868, but did not disembark until the next day. Over the next 30 years, Br Ambrose established 30 Christian Brothers’ schools around Australia. Ultimately, over 120 schools were established or staffed by the Christian Brothers in Australia - a living testament not only to the vision of Edmund Rice, but to the faith, perseverance and tenacity of the men who followed him.
The Christian Brothers drew inspiration from Jesus as their model for life; he who lived in solidarity and service with the poor, sick and marginalised of society. They made a commitment to bring the Good News to the youth of Australia and their communities. Their hopes and dreams, like ours today, were to encourage the students under their care to get to know Christ better and follow his example in the service of others; to live a faith of action for justice.
The Year 10 students, who will be heading out on their immersions next week, and, in fact, all students who undertake their service hours working with the marginalised are living out this ideal and sharing in our collective dreams. We pray for all those students next week.
Mass starts at 5:30pm on Sunday 25th November at Our Lady of Dolours Church.
In conjunction with Fr Jim McKeon, the senior students of St Pius X College and Mercy College are combining to stage a monthly “takeover” of the parish’s Sunday night Mass. All students and their families from both schools (and others) are invited to come and participate in as many of the ministries of the Mass as possible. This would include ministers of the Word, ministers of Communion, Altar servers and musicians. Students will also be invited to speak during the Mass about social justice projects, retreats and other events in the life of their colleges. There will also be a BBQ and games after Mass. All are welcome.
Please remember that all students and parents are invited to attend Mass in the College Chapel every second Tuesday at 8:00am. It is a wonderful way to start the day by sharing in the Eucharist with your sons and other members of the College. Students from Mercy College are regular participants and co-contributors to each Mass.
The next Mass will be on Tuesday 27 November.
