Remote Learning Term 2

Senior Pathways Program

Congratulations to our Senior Pathways Program students on a successful remote learning experience and  smooth transition to face-to-face learning!

You have shown great resilience and ability to put your best foot forward under difficult and unusual circumstances by staying engaged, organised and independent – what a fantastic effort!

REMINDERS

Whilst we are used to a more relaxed approach during remote learning, now that we are back to school the Senior Pathways Team would like to remind students of the following rules, which remain important at school:

  • No Phones policy – this includes the SLC and outside areas. Please keep your phone in your locker for the duration of the school day.
  • Uniform policy – correct uniform should be worn at all times. This includes blazers on the way to and from school, as well as to Period 1 and 5 classes.
  •  grey socks.
  • No facial piercings.
  • No facial hair.

Student Leaders - Remote Learning  Experiences Term 2

Year 12Phoebe Baker

My overall experience during online learning  quarantine was positive. I found that having my own personal space, away from any noise and distractions helped me to keep focused on my work and I managed to finish more work on a daily basis than I have ever been able to complete on a normal school day. I also found that having the ability to do certain school based tasks at my own pace allowed me to complete work to a higher standard and in turn I received a deeper learning experience in some subjects as I was able to do background research instead of just completing the task for the sake of completing it. Besides enjoying online learning, I am incredibly happy to finally be back at school. Minus any distractions I may face at school, it is worth it to be able to learn around and with all my peers and build stronger connections with my peers and teachers.

Year 11Imogen Cunnington and Lola Murchie

The eight weeks in isolation was tough for VCE classes. The one on one, face to face learning is more important than most of us knew, however it gave us the chance to have complete control over our learning. Individual routines changed to what suited each of us best and we had to take complete responsibility for our learning without having our teachers constantly reminding us to stay on task. Overall, we became more independent learners and realised what modes of learning work best for us.

Year 10Abbey Bradley

Throughout these past couple of months, everyone has been adjusting to the new and evolving world. Although ‘online school’ seemed to be a daunting new experience for all of the students at MESC, we have to remember that our teachers had to learn how to teach a class while being at home. These last few months have taught us how to be resilient, independent and thankful that our staff and teachers put in so much effort. Overall, I believe that ‘online schooling’ has given us all a valuable lesson in some key qualities that will help us to succeed later on in life.

Year 9 – Milly Cunnington

During Remote Learning for most of our classes we would join an online call at the time you would normally have the subject. Remote learning was very challenging in some ways, not being able to ask lots of questions, and not being able to see friends or teachers. Another major challenge for students was self-motivation to complete work. But the teachers at Mount Eliza did a fabulous job! Trying to support and encourage their students in every way possible, some teachers used Microsoft Teams as a way to speak to students individually and help them with any work. Other teachers did activities to engage all the students, like a Kahoot! at the start of each lesson. During remote learning I learnt how to manage my time wisely and remain focused in a different environment.

Year 8Remme Mason

Home learning was a fun new way to experience school life. The first couple of weeks were a challenge as you didn’t know what to expect but as the weeks progressed I found home learning to be an exciting experience. The teachers were really supportive and made sure we all knew exactly what we were doing and when to hand in each item. Home learning was a good way to keep students busy while still at home. By having most of our classes on Teams it was easy to find the teachers and to ask questions if need be. The Year Eight leaders all agree they had a good time in home learning but are all happy to get back to school.

Year 7 - Flynn O’Day

I had my fair share of ups and downs in home learning but overall, it was a great learning experience. I learned how to properly study independently and manage my time wisely. I found that I was saying ‘You’re on mute’ often and I was sometimes on the receiving end of that phrase. One of my favourite moments in-home learning was in a Science lesson where my teacher had her kids help with the Prac which was quite entertaining.

I went on calls after the lessons and had a chat with my classmates about the lesson plans and we worked through the tasks together.  The hardest part for me was not being able to talk to my teachers and ask for them to show me where I was wrong and correct my work while I was doing it. It was a relief to get back to school and see all my friends again.

Remote Learning-Maths

Congratulations to all our parents and guardians who stepped up to assist their student during remote learning. Some people find assisting their student in Maths rewarding, whilst others can find it daunting. These two flyers are from the Maths Association of Victoria and give parents and guardians some tips when it comes to helping their student with Maths work. Remember – nobody expects you to be an expert or to replace the teacher – just to try and have a go.
