News from 5/6 Unit

Hello Families,

The students have been very excited with the commencement of the Performing Arts and Digital Technologies classes. In Performing Arts we are looking at Rhythm and Roleplays. Students are working in partners and teams to create musical patterns and short dramatic plays. In Digital Technologies, students will be learning to navigate the internet safely while gaining ‘hands on’ experience when faced with real world problems.

Over the next two weeks, in Numeracy, students will continue to apply skills and knowledge of the four operations and place value. They develop different ways to solve multiplication problems. In Literacy, our focus is creating interesting characters and settings. With students beginning to develop their own narrative stories over the coming weeks. These skills will then be transferred to students reading, where they will develop text analysis skills, and apply various comprehension strategies.

The students have started Interschool Sports. We have already competed against three schools and win or lose, students are thoroughly enjoying themselves. Students have the opportunity to work on their ball skills, work in a team as well as meeting new people and making new friends.

Students have met with their Foundation and Year 1 buddies and will continue to do so once a fortnight. Students have enjoyed working with the younger students and relish spending time with them. By participating in the buddies program, students are able to act as leaders, guiding younger members of the school community and provide valuable knowledge regarding life at school.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Kind Regards,

Pippa Davis and Nathan Baxter

What’s Happening in 3/4?

Did you smell something delicious when you ventured past the 3/4 unit this week? On Tuesday, we spent the day learning about all things ‘Pancakes’ – for Pancake Day. The students participated in numeracy and literacy tasks that were pancake-focused and even got to sample some yummy pancakes (With our favourite toppings of course!).

We have started our new unit on Addition and Subtraction, with students carefully setting out horizontal and vertical equations in their numeracy books – As it turns out, neatness is key to our success! Later on in the week we will be learning how to set out carried numbers when completing addition of HUGE numbers.

Our literacy focus for the week has been improving our fluency when decoding words – with many of us working to increase the speed and accuracy of words with a similar rime.

In inquiry, we have been learning different ways to communicate ideas to a group as well as provide meaningful and ‘actionable feedback’ in our ‘Austin’s Butterfly’ task.

The first homework of the year will be sent home on Tuesday next week – we know that the students are VERY excited to get started. Remember that homework should be an enjoyable time for students and families – not overly onerous!

If you or your child has questions about the homework, please encourage your child to contact their teacher – as this promotes their sense of independence.

Have a fantastic rest of the week!

Sports News

District Swimming: Warrandyte Region: Monday 21/02/22. Yarra Valley Swimming pool.

Liam H, Remy S-S and Ava D represented Marlborough PS at the District Swimming Carnival. The competition was fierce, and all our students swam strongly and proudly for Marlborough P.S. in 2 individual events. As we had 3 competitors plus another student from another school we even competed in the Freestyle 4 x 50m, Open relay. Even though the students were all different ages and were competing in the Open team Marlborough team achieved a mighty 2nd, an awesome result. Speaking of awesome achievements, both Liam and Remy won their 50 m event for their age group for Backstroke and Freestyle.

On 28th February Liam competed in Divisional Swimming at Yarra Valley. He swam so well considering he had never raced until the district carnival. He achieved 4th in a nail biting close backstroke event and 5th in Freestyle. Liam should be so proud of his achievements especially as he had never raced 50 m before until District Swimming.  Thank you to the students for competing and their parents who went with their children to support their achievements. An extra  big thank you to Virginia H for being the Team Leader in charge of the Marlborough Team at the District  carnival, due to Covid restrictions.

WELL DONE TEAM!

School Contributions for 2022

Using the forms sent home last month you can choose to pay by Credit Card at the office, BPay (details on the form) or Direct into the bank account.  If you pay via BPay or Direct into bank please return the forms (both pages please showing all contributions that you may choose to pay) to the office or scan and email to marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au so we are able to reconcile your payment.  You can also pay via Compass.  You can find this in the Payment Centre on the home page.

Please note that you may see in the payment section at the bottom of the page that you have an unallocated funds credit.  This may be because you had a credit from a cancelled excursion or something similar.  If you would like to use this credit, then you need to process this first by removing the amounts prepopulated in the Curriculum Contributions box and just adding the amount of the credit and then clicking on the process button.  The curriculum contributions will then show the amount less the credit applied, and you can continue with your payment.  If you wish to donate the credit amount, then an alternative option is to process your payment first and then add the credit amount to one of the donation areas and processing this. If you require any assistance, please contact the office 9870 3468 or email marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au
