News From The Patch

The students have shown hard work, grit and determination this week in the garden. They have drawn on the Habit of Mind of persisting and the school value of thriving in a team culture to empty a compost bin, to then move that compost to the front of the school, pull out summer crops, and dig compost and manure into garden beds so they are ready for planting.

Despite the physical work, all students have felt a sense of pride and satisfaction at completing the job at the end of the class.

Personally,  I have got the most pleasure this week from the student's awe and wonderment in the garden. We forget as adults sometimes that it is the quick and simple things in life that give a child the most pleasure. The excitement of the garden, students planting seedlings of broccoli, beetroot, raddish and spinach has been beautiful to watch.

A student this week wanted to plant some seeds at home. So the group made paper seed packs from some paper that was going to be recycled and each took home some parsley and marigold seeds I had collected that week. The student's focus on making the seed pack and the delight and wonderment in receiving a few seeds made my week!

Happy Gardening Kingswood!

News from The Patch Café

This week at The Patch café, we continued our tasting through Spain.

Students in 4C, 4D, 6H and 6M worked hard on their slicing, dicing, mixing and kneading to create a vibrant Spanish Pisto (A medley of summer veggies), crusty bread rolls and Madalena’s (Madeline’s) for a sweet finish.

A huge thanks to our wonderful parent helpers from these classes, without them we cannot run Kitchen/Garden classes. A special mention to Jessie and Jacqui for volunteering this week in classes other than their own child’s, this meant that classes could go ahead, and students didn’t miss out on something that they love.

For anyone who may still be thinking about it, please consider volunteering in The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. You don’t need to be an expert cook or gardener, just be ready for some fun and taste some delicious dishes!
