Junior School Music

Our Junior School musicians have had a great start to the year with many exciting programs now underway:

  • The Year 3 and 4 students have begun their string classes, with the wonderful Shelford string staff catering for both our beginner and experienced players at these year levels.
  • In Year 5, all students have had the opportunity to select a band instrument to learn; with flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, French Horn and percussion on offer.
  • Our individual instrumental lessons are also in full swing. Please note that you can apply to learn an instrument at any time during the school year at Shelford.
  • The Corelli String Orchestra has begun rehearsing on Tuesdays after school, as have our Junior Chamber Strings with Ms Dixon Lawrence.
  • Our AMEB Grade 1 Theory classes have begun on Mondays before school for Junior School students.
  • We have enjoyed listening to several soloists perform at assemblies. Jocelyn J, our 2022 Junior School Performing Arts Captain, has played two unaccompanied Bach pieces on her cello at two of our assemblies. Lili M, Year 3 and Sylvie M, Year 5 joined forces to play the recessional at the recent Junior School Induction Ceremony with a fun duet of Hunter’s Chorus by CM von Weber, and Miranda S, Year 4 accompanied the song The Tree Song by Ken Medema on violin. As ever, we thank Ms Kathryn Pisani for her beautiful accompanying in Junior School assemblies and chapel services.
  • The Sheltones Choir begins rehearsing this Thursday before school with Ms Karla Nyhuis and Ms Jenni Thom.
  • In addition to our Kodály based music literacy and ensemble skills curriculum, we are also practising the songs for The Lion King Jnr in classes and in our Years 3–6 and JDC Choirs. All students can find these songs on Shelly under the Groups section. Happy practising!
