International Women's Day

Beat the Bias

The Greensborough College International Women’s Day Brunch

On the 8th March 2022, Greensborough College hosted its inaugural International Women’s Day brunch. The event was attended by 50 students, including students currently holding leadership positions within the college. The catered event aimed to celebrate the achievements of women and discuss the changes that we still need to see in the future.

We were honoured to welcome a panel of fierce women paving the way for a future without bias. Emily Stewart, an alumnus of Greensborough College was (virtually) welcomed back to the College. Emily touched on her career as a published author and the qualities she sees in other women leaders. Elizabeth Nealy is the current Mayor of Banyule, taking a year of leave from secondary teaching. Elizabeth spoke about the changes she has seen since working in politics in 2008 but would still like to see a future of equality in every facet. Kate Thwaites, the Federal Member for Jagajaga and a member of the Labor party, Kate has also worked as a television and radio journalist for the ABC. Kate would like to see more diversity in political leadership to better reflect the constituents they are representing. We also welcomed our very own Pauline Barker to the panel to discuss her experiences as a woman in leadership both as a school Principal and as the President of her football club.

Panel members were asked to reflect on their careers, their aspirations, qualities they see in other women leaders, issues that we are still currently facing and situations in which they have personally encountered bias. Their stories were honest, inspirational and a great opportunity to reflect on the progress made in regards to gender equality but also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done.

A big thankyou to all the attendees. We are so proud of the way you all conducted yourselves. We look forward to our next Greensborough College Annual International Women’s Day Brunch.
