Carers Morning Tea - Friday, October 18th

Last Friday we had the wonderful opportunity to honour and pamper our carers. The morning celebrated their huge hearts of courage, compassion and relentless dedication. It was a privilege to spend time with 26 carers and to hear some of their journey and joys.

To complement the morning we were very blessed to have 2 representatives from the Body Shop Southland giving our carers a hand wash and massage with beautifully fragranced products.

Deb Burrell was asked to share her testimony as we celebrated her journey with funding. We have attached it for you.

Our journey started in 2017 when our beautiful boy who is non verbal required a communication device. We went through trials of different devices and found one that suits.

We then proceeded with applications through NDIS with all sorts of reports from specialists and ourselves including daily routines and the impact communication is having on him and life in general in all areas and relationships.

As time went on all applications were unsuccessful, still networking and sourcing contacts and information.

Had wonderful support from staff at Yarrabah and family which helped greatly. Kept looking for different avenues to turn down.

Until we were in contact with a charity that were way too happy to help us with a grant.

We were very excited to hear this and could not believe our luck that our beautiful boy will now have a voice, which we have dreamt of this day.

Our reason for telling our story is to never ever give up. When it comes to our  beautiful children, it's worth it's weight in gold.

As Dory said, "Just keep swimming."

Parent/Carers Support Group

Are you new to the Yarrabah community?

Are you looking for a place to connect and explore your journey?

Are you looking for a safe place to be heard and understood?

We are currently running a support group to support parent/carers in their journey.

Comments made by other parents who have attended this group:

Starting grief therapy has been the best decision I have made for my son and I. I have learned so much about acceptance and understanding of our journey. I have met some remarkable women who have helped remind me of how much strength I have within. Being able to share my stories with others that truly understand and listen has been so freeing. So blessed to be part of the Yarrabah family.

Maria

The Grief Learning Group at Yarrabah has become like a family to me.

I have made connections I never believed possible and even a life-long friend,

Our group is a safe space,

A place to share our wins and our struggles,

A place to cry,

A place to lift each other up,

A place that supports our journey,

A place with no judgment.

Juliette
