AGTV GERMAN POETRY COMPETITION

Last Thursday and Friday students from Levels 4 to 6 were invited to come to the German room to try out for the annual AGTV (Association of German Teachers of Victoria) German Poetry Competition.

Interested students recited a selected poem of their choice to Frau Lindner, Frau Heine, Frau Taylor and Frau Schneider.

Students were judged according to the following AGTV judging criteria:

  • Pronunciation and Intonation

The words are pronounced correctly with confidence.

  • Diction and Phrasing

The phrases are distinct and appropriately emphasized e.g. tempo, stress, pauses.

  • Interpretation and Insight

How effectively the understanding of the mood and meaning of the poem is conveyed. This includes the overall tone and use of voice, eye contact, facial expressions and, in some instances, limited gestures as would be appropriate for a recitation to a German-speaking community who understands German.

All students did a ‘fantastisch’ job of reciting their poems to the German teachers.

The rules of the regional final permit only 3 students from each year level to represent their school.

The following students have been selected to represent Rangeview at the regional final later this term:

Level 4:

Alysha 4C

Suhani 4H

Elliot 4H

Level 5:

Frank 5/6C

Justin 5/6H

Nina 5/6J

Level 6:

Josephine 5/6A

Molly 5/6C

Abyan 5/6M

Congratulations! We wish these students ‘viel Spaß’ (lots of fun) and ‘viel Glück’ (lots of luck) in preparing for this special event.

AGTV GROUP POETRY PERFORMANCE

We are also delighted to announce that for the first time Rangeview will be entering students into the Group Poetry Performance.

The following students have been selected to participate in this competition:

Elise 5/6G

Jolie 5/6K

Evie 5/6K

Although the AGTV Poetry Competition this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, the group performance is a relatively new category of the competition, first trialled in 2019.

A group must have a minimum of 3 members and can be any groups of students learning German from Years 4 to 9.

Students are asked to learn a poem from a list provided by the AGTV Committee to perform as a group in any style. The performance will be filmed and submitted to the Committee for State Final judging.

We also wish Elise, Jolie and Evie all the very best in preparing for this special competition.

The poem they will be performing together is called ‘der Bratapfel’ (the baked apple). Mmm! Lecker!

DID YOU KNOW?

By our German Captain, Flynn

  • Berlin is nine times bigger than Paris and has more bridges than Venice with 1,700 bridges in Berlin and only 409 in Venice.

  • In 2014, Germany’s 16 states abolished tuition fees for all public universities. This draws a lot of students to study in Germany, as it is now the fourth most popular study-abroad destination (after the US, UK and Australia).

  • There are over 1,500 breweries in Germany with more than 7000 different types of beer.
