Learning In My Level
A celebration of what's happening across the school!
Level 1 has had an exciting start to Term 3 with lots of engaging and hands on activities. Students have enjoyed incursions, inquiry rotations and are looking forward to an excursion to Como House, two whole school dress up days, Book Fair, Father’s Day stall and Billy Cart Day.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have been partaking in an inquiry unit called ‘All Mixed Up’. In this unit, students have been learning about chemical reactions when mixing chemicals. We are in the process of rotating through four different activities, which include making damper, chocolate crackles, Oobleck and playdough. In addition, we have had a ‘Chemistry Chaos’ incursion from our friends at Mad About Science.
100 Days and Maths
On Monday 24th June, we celebrated our 100th Day of Level 1. To celebrate 100 days, each class had their own fish and chips party. To go along with this, we have learnt about addition, subtraction and place-value facts related to the number one hundred. In Maths we have also been building upon our location and direction knowledge. Next week, we are going to start learning about multiplication!
Literacy
For Reading sessions, we have been learning how to make inferences by looking for clues in text and images combined with our prior knowledge. We have been continuing to compare the different features of fiction and non-fiction texts. Following on from this, we have been learning to identify the main idea and supporting details in texts.
We have continued to incorporate explicit phonics teaching into our Literacy program, whereby the students focus on a specific sound and spelling pattern of the week. In writing, we have been learning about poetry. Students have started by learning about acrostic and rhyming poems.
We have had a couple of exciting weeks of Talk Time where students have been confidently practicing their speaking skills to share about what they did on the holidays and their favourite recipes.
Level 1 is looking forward to many other exciting learning opportunities that will be taking place later this term. We would like to give a massive ‘Thank-you’ to all the parents that have volunteered in the classroom this term, you have been a huge help and are greatly appreciated.

We have continued to incorporate explicit phonics teaching into our Literacy program. Students use decodable readers, whiteboards, Reading Eggs, Heggerty, finger spelling and syllabification to learn about the weekly sound.
We have started learning about Poetry in our Writing lessons. The practice of poetry strengthens language, writing, and speaking skills. Writing poetry often prompts us to look at the world from a variety of perspectives. Students have started by learning about acrostic poems.

Inquiry
For our Inquiry topic ‘All Mixed Up,’ we started off Term 3 with an incursion from Mad about Science. During this workshop student developed an understanding and appreciation of chemistry science. We learnt about the physical changes that occur with chemical reactions. The students also learnt about the scientific method and laboratory techniques.
Students have also been participating in weekly Inquiry rotations about our Inquiry topic. Level 2 students have been learning how to write a lab report and a procedure text. During the lessons we have made Oobleck, Playdough, Chocolate Crackles and Damper.
