Body Education with Kelly Nash

Kelly trained as a teacher in the 1980’s (so it’s probably just as well she has decided on Body and Sexuality Education and not Fashion Education!). After many years working in schools as a teacher and in health promotion, including 3 years with the Royal Women’s Hospital health promotion unit and 7 years with Family Life Victoria, Kelly started her own body/sexuality education business. Kelly’s aim is to create a relaxed and inclusive environment where her unique and fun facilitation style allows informal, respectful learning for young people so that they may be empowered with knowledge and understanding about their bodies, her greatest hope is that she is able to support the children’s families in this important part of their education. Kelly has WWCC and offers Family Evenings and/or School-based Programs.

Family Evenings: These sessions are attended by children and their adults and are an opportunity for families to discuss the topics listed with Kelly facilitating – these sessions are fun and informal. The year levels suggested are a guide only and students and families are welcome to attend any of the sessions.

Grade 1/2 session – Celebrating Same and Different

A session to help children understand families, what makes them the same and what makes them different. Then onto what makes bodies the same and different. Age appropriate language is used to help children understand the differences in body parts and reproduction. The notion of private parts and private places is discussed and an understanding of feeling safe in their own bodies is also discussed. Families are given the opportunity to talk about how babies develop and how they are born. (This session does not include sexual intercourse but does include introducing the terms egg and sperm).

Grade 3/4 session – Bodies and Reproduction

This session begins by also acknowledging that families, like bodies, have similarities and differences. Then this session goes on to name parts of the body that are the same and parts that are different. This session also includes a discussion about private parts and places and feeling safe in our bodies. From there, conception (including sexual intercourse and a brief and basic explanation of assisted reproduction) is explained and this is followed with a discussion of foetal development and birth.

Grade 5/6 session – Puberty

This session is for students and their families to talk about the changes of puberty. The physical, social and emotional changes that are generally experienced by everyone will be discussed – Pimples, Hair, Shape Change, Growth Spurt, Voice Change, Body Odour and Mood Swings - allowing time for students to talk with their attending adults about management strategies. Then specific hormone driven changes (wet dreams and periods) are explained and further opportunities are provided for students to chat to their attending adult(s).
